Features
- Flat head with Phillips Drive
- 18-8 Stainless Material
- Stainless is also superior to steel in withstanding some elevation in application operating temperature while maintaining its strength.
- Stainless steel machine screws are used in applications which require general atmospheric corrosion resistance, in food processing machinery and refrigeration equipment.
- 5/16-18 Diameter, 1-1/4" Length
Additional Notes
- Other sizes and quantities available by request | Hardness and tensile strength standards are offered as guides only for stainless machine screws. There is currently no national standard for these performance requirements for stainless machine screws.

Metallics JFMP66SS – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will a 5/16-18 machine screw thread into my existing tapped hole or standard 5/16 nut?
The Metallics JFMP66SS is a 5/16-18 UNC screw, 18 threads per inch, made to ANSI/ASME B1.1. That is the standard coarse thread for 5/16 inch, so it mates with any 5/16-18 tapped hole, nut, or insert. If your hole is 5/16-24 (fine thread), this screw will not engage.
2) Does this flat head screw sit flush in a countersunk hole?
Yes, it is a flat countersunk head built to ASME B18.6.3-1998, with a head width of 0.556 to 0.597 in. and head height of 0.165 to 0.191 in. In an 82 degree countersink of matching diameter it finishes flush. If your enclosure or plate has a flat bore with no countersink, the head will stand proud and you want a pan head instead.
3) What size Phillips bit do I need for these Metallics machine screws?
A #4 Phillips driver. The recess runs 0.358 in. diameter, 0.205 in. deep, 0.061 in. wide. A #3 bit will spin in the recess and cam out, which is how stainless heads get chewed up, so carry the #4.
4) Can I use 18-8 stainless machine screws outdoors or in a wash-down area?
18-8 stainless is the usual choice where general atmospheric corrosion resistance is needed, and it is commonly specified on food processing machinery and refrigeration equipment where plated steel would rust out. It also holds strength better than plain steel at elevated operating temperatures. For chloride-heavy coastal or pool chemical exposure, 18-8 can still pit, and a 316 grade is the usual step up.
5) How are the Metallics JFMP66SS screws packaged and what is the minimum I can buy?
They ship in a jar of 100, and 100 count is the order minimum. Total weight of the jar is 2.54 lbs. If you need a different length or a larger count in 5/16-18 flat head Phillips, other sizes and quantities are available by request.
6) Do these screws qualify for a Buy American or ARRA-funded job?
Metallics lists the JFMP66SS as both ARRA compliant and Buy American compliant. Country of origin is China. Government and institutional buyers working to a domestic-content clause should check that distinction against the exact clause in their contract, since the two compliance programs and a domestic-manufacture requirement are not the same test.
7) Will a 1-1/4 inch long machine screw be long enough for my panel and nut?
The JFMP66SS runs 1-1/4 in. long overall. Because it is a flat countersunk head, that 1-1/4 in. includes the head sitting down inside the countersink, so your usable grip is the full length minus the material above the countersink. Figure on roughly 5/16 in. of thread engagement past the far side for a 5/16-18 nut, and size your stack accordingly.
8) Are these machine screws the same as a self-tapping or sheet metal screw?
No. A machine screw like the JFMP66SS has a straight, uniform 5/16-18 UNC machine thread and needs either a tapped hole or a nut, it will not form its own thread in sheet metal. For unthreaded sheet steel you want a self-tapping or thread-cutting screw, or drill and tap to 5/16-18 first and then use this screw.
