Metallics JTRM83 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What does tri-drive mean on the Metallics JTRM83 machine screw?
Tri-drive means one head accepts three drivers: a slotted bit, a Phillips bit, or a square (Robertson) bit. On the JTRM83 that recess is in a round head, so whatever driver is already in your pouch will turn it. Useful for panel and device work where you are not swapping bits between fasteners.
2) Is 2 inches too long for mounting a receptacle or switch in a standard box?
For a flush device in a standard box, 2 inches is longer than you need, and the excess will bottom out or stick into the box. Reach for the 2 inch JTRM83 when you are mounting through extension rings, mud rings, spacers, or setting a device out from a recessed box. For a straight flush mount, use a shorter 6-32 round head machine screw.
3) Are these Metallics screws corrosion protected for damp locations?
The JTRM83 is steel with a zinc plating, which handles indoor and normally dry or occasionally damp interior work. Zinc plated steel is not the choice for wet, exterior, coastal, or chemically aggressive locations, where stainless steel is the correct material.
4) Is a round head machine screw okay where a cover plate has to sit flat?
No. A round head sits proud of the surface by design, so it is wrong under a flat cover plate or anywhere a flush face is needed. The JTRM83 is for exposed mounting where the raised head is acceptable or wanted as a bearing surface. If you need flush, specify a flat head countersunk screw instead.
5) Do 6-32 machine screws need a tapped hole, or will they bite into sheet metal?
Machine screws like the JTRM83 need a mating thread, either a tapped hole or a nut. They are not self-tapping and will not cut their own thread in plain sheet metal. In an electrical box the device-mounting holes are already tapped 6-32, so no prep is needed there; anywhere else, plan on a tapped hole or a 6-32 nut.
6) How are the Metallics JTRM83 screws packaged for a service van?
They come in a jar, which is what makes them practical for van or shop stock: the lid stays closed, the screws don't scatter in a drawer, and you can pull a handful without opening a bag. Good for an MRO crib where the same 6-32 size gets used across many jobs.
