Metallics DWC3M – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Are these Metallics DWC3M drywall screws for wood framing or metal studs?
Wood framing. The DWC3M is a coarse thread, sharp point screw, which is the combination meant to bite into wood studs and furring rather than steel. Metallics lists its applications as wood to wood, drywall to wood, cabinet installations, and electrical, plumbing, and heating/air conditioning work. For light gauge steel studs you want a fine thread drywall screw with a self-drilling or needle point instead.
2) Can black phosphate drywall screws be used outdoors or in damp areas?
No. Black phosphate is a dry interior coating, not a corrosion barrier, and these DWC3M screws are steel with a black phosphate finish. Keep them for interior drywall, wood, and cabinet work. Exterior decks, soffits, or wet locations call for a coated deck screw or stainless.
3) Do Metallics DWC3M drywall screws qualify for a Buy American or ARRA funded project?
No. The DWC3M is not Buy American compliant and is not ARRA compliant, with country of origin listed as multiple. For a federally funded job carrying domestic sourcing requirements, you will need a domestically manufactured fastener instead.
4) Will the bugle head sink flush without tearing drywall paper?
That is what the bugle profile is for. The DWC3M has a bugle head measuring 0.315 to 0.347 in. across with a head height of 0.020 to 0.031 in., so the underside curve dimples the face paper and seats just below the surface for taping instead of cutting through it. Set your driver clutch or depth stop rather than driving it hard.
5) How many screws come in a jar of Metallics DWC3M, and is there a minimum order?
These ship 1,000 per jar, and 1,000 is the order minimum. A jar weighs 3.74 lbs. The pack also includes a free power bit.
6) Are these screws hard enough not to snap or strip the Phillips recess when driven with an impact?
The DWC3M is heat treated to Rockwell C45-64 and made from AISI 1018 steel, so the recess holds up to a drywall gun. The Phillips recess runs 0.176 to 0.201 in. in diameter and 0.106 in. deep. Hardened drywall screws are brittle in shear by design, so do not use them as structural or framing fasteners.
7) What thread does a coarse drywall screw like the DWC3M actually have?
Coarse UNC threading at 8 to 10 threads per inch. That wide pitch is what gives fast pull-down into wood and why electrical and mechanical trades use the same screw for mounting boxes, straps, and backing to wood.
8) Should I expect the head and length dimensions to match another brand's #6 drywall screw exactly?
Close, but not identical. Metallics notes there is no single industry standard for drywall screw or bugle head dimensions, so the published head width, head height, and recess figures are a guide and slight deviations are normal. If you are matching an existing installation for appearance, the #6 x 1-1/4 size and bugle Phillips head are the things to match on, not thousandths of an inch.
