1) What are the two ends on the Viega 79295 ProPress adapter?
It's a press by female pipe thread adapter: a 1/2 inch ProPress socket on one end and a 3/8 inch FPT on the other. So you press it onto 1/2 inch copper tube and thread a 3/8 inch male-threaded item (stop valve, gauge, appliance connector) into the other side. If you need the threads to be male instead, you want a P x MPT adapter, not this one.
2) Will the Viega 79295 adapter work on 1/2 inch PEX or CPVC?
No. The press end is a ProPress socket sized for 1/2 inch copper tube, and ProPress bronze fittings press onto copper and copper alloy tubing. PEX needs a PureFlow fitting, and CPVC needs a solvent-weld transition. Using this on anything but copper tube won't seal.
3) Is the Viega 79295 press adapter safe for potable drinking water lines?
It's made of zero lead bronze, which is what Viega uses for potable water ProPress fittings. Plumbing department item, bronze body, and the lead-free bronze alloy is the reason it can go on domestic hot and cold water rather than being limited to non-potable service.
4) What does Smart Connect do on this Viega adapter, and does it mean I can skip pressing it?
No, you still have to press it. Smart Connect is a feature of the sealing element that lets water pass at an unpressed connection during pressure test, so an unpressed joint shows itself before the wall closes up. It identifies misses, it does not replace the press. Press the 1/2 inch socket with the correct ProPress jaw for that size.
5) Do I need anything else besides the Viega 79295 to finish the connection?
On the press side, nothing goes in the fitting itself, but you need a press tool with a 1/2 inch ProPress jaw, and the copper tube cut square, deburred and marked to depth. On the 3/8 inch FPT side you'll need thread sealant or PTFE tape and the mating male-threaded part. The sealing element is already installed in the press socket.
