Metallics JFM86 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can I use these screws on a federally funded or Buy American job?
No. The JFM86 flat head machine screws are not Buy American compliant and not ARRA compliant, with country of origin listed as multiple. If your spec carries a domestic-content requirement, these will not satisfy it and you need a domestically sourced fastener.
2) Are zinc plated steel machine screws okay for outdoor or wet locations?
These are zinc plated carbon steel (AISI 1006 to 1022 material), which is a dry, indoor-grade finish. Zinc gives light corrosion resistance for interior boxes, panels, and enclosures, but in wet, washdown, coastal, or buried conditions it will rust. For those locations specify a stainless machine screw of the same 8-32 x 1 in. size instead.
3) How strong is an 8-32 steel zinc machine screw, and what can I hang off it?
Rated at 850 lb minimum tensile strength with a hardness of Rockwell B70 to B100. That is ample for securing devices, cover plates, straps, brackets, and enclosure hardware. It is a tensile rating for the fastener itself, not a load rating for whatever substrate you thread it into, so the tapped hole or anchor is usually what limits the real capacity.
4) Do these machine screws come with nuts, or do I need to buy them separately?
Screws only, sold as a jar of 100 with no nuts or washers included. A machine screw either threads into a tapped hole or needs a mating 8-32 nut, so if you are through-bolting a bracket or panel, add 8-32 machine screw nuts and any flat or lock washers to the order.
5) Will these flat head screws meet a drawing that calls out ASME B18.6.3 machine screws?
Yes. Dimensions are held to ASME B18.6.3-1998 and threads to ANSI/ASME B1.1, which is the pairing most electrical and mechanical submittals cite for slotted flat head machine screws. Head and slot dimensions fall in the standard's ranges for a number 8 size.
6) Is a machine screw the right choice, or should I be using a sheet metal or self-tapping screw?
Pick a machine screw when the hole is already tapped or you are using a nut, as in device boxes, panel rails, enclosure doors, and strut fittings. It has uniform UNC threads and a blunt end, so it will not cut its own thread. If you are fastening into bare unthreaded sheet metal, a self-tapping or sheet metal screw is the right part. The JFM86 is intended for electrical, plumbing, heating and air conditioning work.
7) How are the Metallics JFM86 screws packaged and what is the smallest quantity I can order?
They ship in a jar of 100 pieces, and 100 is the order minimum. Jar weight is 0.55 lbs. Handy for a van or shop shelf where you are pulling a few screws at a time rather than opening a bulk box.
