Metallics JFM89 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will the Metallics JFM89 8-32 machine screw thread into a standard device box or switch plate ear?
Yes. The JFM89 is an 8-32 UNC thread at 32 threads per inch, cut to ANSI/ASME B1.1, which is the same 8-32 machine thread used on outlet box ears, switch and receptacle mounting holes, and plaster rings. At 2 inches long it is the extended-length version, so it is the one you reach for when a device has to reach back through a deep mud ring or stacked extension ring rather than sitting flush.
2) Does the Metallics JFM89 meet Buy American or ARRA requirements for a government or public project?
No. The JFM89 is not Buy American compliant and is not ARRA compliant, and country of origin is listed as multiple. If you are buying for a federally funded job with domestic sourcing language in the spec, this fastener will not satisfy it and you will need a domestically produced 8-32 machine screw.
3) Does a flat head slotted screw like the JFM89 sit flush, or will the head stand proud of the plate?
Flat head means a countersunk 82 degree head that seats flush in a chamfered or countersunk hole. On the JFM89 the head measures 0.285 to 0.312 in. across with a head height of 0.084 to 0.1 in., so in a plain punched hole with no countersink the head will stand up roughly a tenth of an inch. If you need the fastener to finish flush on flat sheet or an un-countersunk ear, use a round or truss head instead and let the head bear on the surface.
4) How is the Metallics JFM89 machine screw packaged and what is the minimum I can buy?
The JFM89 ships in a jar of 100 screws, and 100 is the order minimum, so one jar is the smallest buy. Useful detail for an MRO crib: the jar keeps loose 8-32 x 2 in. screws together on a shelf rather than in a bag that splits.
5) What screwdriver do I need for the JFM89, and will a power driver cam out of it?
It is a slotted drive, so you need a flat blade, not a Phillips or square bit. The slot runs 0.045 to 0.054 in. wide and 0.029 to 0.045 in. deep, which is a shallow slot by design, so a slotted bit in an impact or high speed driver will walk out of it easily. Hand drive it or run a clutched driver at low speed. If you want a bit that stays put under power, pick a combination or Phillips head 8-32 screw instead.
6) Is a zinc plated steel 8-32 screw OK outdoors or in a damp location?
The JFM89 is AISI 1006 to 1022 carbon steel with a zinc finish. Zinc plating is a mild corrosion coating meant for dry interior service, which is what the electrical, plumbing and HVAC applications it is listed for assume. For wet locations, exterior boxes, or anywhere washdown or coastal salt is in play, specify a stainless 8-32 machine screw instead; plated carbon steel will rust at the thread and seize.
7) What dimensional standard do these flat head machine screws conform to, and will they interchange with another brand's 8-32?
Head and body dimensions follow ASME B18.6.3-1998 and the thread follows ANSI/ASME B1.1, both of which are the standard specs for inch machine screws. Because both the thread form and the head geometry are to published standard, a JFM89 interchanges with any other standards-conforming 8-32 x 2 in. flat head slotted machine screw, so you can mix it with existing stock without rechecking fit.
8) Are the Metallics JFM89 screws fully threaded the full 2 inches, and do they come with nuts?
The JFM89 is sold as screws only, 8-32 x 2 in. in a jar of 100; no nuts, washers, or anchors are included. If the application is a through bolt rather than threading into a tapped hole, add 8-32 machine screw nuts separately.
