Metallics JFMP84 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will the flat head sit flush in a countersunk hole, and how big does the countersink need to be?
It sits flush in a properly countersunk hole. The head measures 0.285 to 0.312 inch across and 0.084 to 0.1 inch high, built to ASME B18.6.3-1998, so your countersink needs to be at least 0.312 inch wide at the surface to bury the head. In an un-countersunk flat plate the head will stand proud by that head height, so use a round or pan head there instead.
2) Do these Metallics machine screws meet Buy American or ARRA requirements for a government job?
No. The JFMP84 is not Buy American compliant and is not ARRA compliant, with country of origin listed as multiple. On a federally funded or Buy America specified project you will need a domestically sourced fastener instead.
3) Does a machine screw like this need a tapped hole, or will it bite into sheet metal on its own?
It needs a mating thread. A machine screw has a straight, uniform 8-32 UNC thread with no point, so it goes into a tapped hole, a threaded box ear, or a nut. For unthreaded sheet metal you want a self-tapping sheet metal screw, not this. Gaging diameter is 0.267 inch, which is what a thread gage checks the screw against.
4) What screwdriver or bit do I need for the JFMP84 flat head Phillips machine screw?
A #2 Phillips bit. The recess is 0.182 inch in diameter and 0.11 inch deep, so a #1 bit will cam out and a #3 will not seat. If you are running these with a driver, keep the clutch low: the screw is carbon steel at Rockwell B70-B100 with an 850 lb minimum tensile, not a hardened fastener.
5) How many 8-32 x 1/2 flat head Phillips screws come in a jar from Metallics?
They ship 100 to a jar, which is the order minimum. If you need a different count or a different length in the same FM/FMP series, Metallics offers other sizes and quantities by request.
6) Is the zinc finish on these machine screws okay for damp or outdoor work?
The JFMP84 is zinc plated carbon steel, made from AISI 1006-1022 stock. Zinc plating is a mild indoor corrosion coating, so it is fine for panel work, device boxes, and conditioned mechanical rooms. For wet locations, exterior enclosures, or anywhere washdown or salt exposure is a factor, specify a stainless machine screw rather than zinc plated steel.
7) What trades and applications are these Metallics FM/FMP flat head screws stocked for?
They are catalogued for electrical, plumbing, heating and air conditioning work, which is where 8-32 flush-head fasteners get used most: device and plate mounting, enclosure covers, panel interiors, and bracket attachment. The zinc yellow version of the same screw is common in electronics assembly.
