1) Will the Metallics JFMP4 8-32 screw thread into a standard electrical box or device yoke?
Yes. The JFMP4 is an 8-32 UNC machine screw, 32 threads per inch, cut to ANSI/ASME B1.1. That is the same thread used on receptacle and switch yokes, box ears, and cover plate tapped holes, so it mates with standard 8-32 tapped hardware. At 1/4 inch long it is short, so it is for thin stack-ups like mounting a device or plate directly to tapped steel, not for reaching through spacers.
2) Do these Metallics screws meet Buy American or ARRA requirements for a government job?
No. The JFMP4 is not Buy American compliant and is not ARRA compliant, with multiple countries of origin. On a federally funded project with domestic sourcing language, these will not qualify and a domestic fastener has to be specified.
3) How strong are these 8-32 zinc machine screws, and can I use them structurally?
The JFMP4 carries an 850 lb minimum tensile rating with a hardness of Rockwell B70 to B100, made from AISI 1006-1022 low carbon steel. That is standard commercial machine screw material for device mounting, panel hardware and cover plates. It is not a graded structural bolt, so for load bearing connections specify a graded cap screw instead.
4) Is zinc plated steel OK for outdoor or damp locations?
These are zinc plated carbon steel, which is an indoor corrosion finish. In wet, coastal or washdown locations the plating gives up and the steel rusts, so specify stainless for those openings. For dry interior electrical work, panels, boxes and enclosures, the zinc finish is the normal choice.
5) Will these interchange with the 8-32 flat head screws already in my panel stock?
They are dimensioned to ASME B18.6.3-1998 with threads to ANSI/ASME B1.1, so head and thread geometry match any other 8-32 x 1/4 flat head Phillips machine screw built to the same standards. Gaging diameter is 0.267 with protrusion 0.023 to 0.039 above gage. The one thing to match is finish, since zinc plated and stainless will look different side by side on exposed plates.
