Metallics JFMP85 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will an 8-32 x 3/4 in. machine screw thread into a standard electrical box or device yoke?
Yes. The Metallics JFMP85 is an 8-32 UNC thread cut to the ANSI/ASME B1.1 thread standard, which is the same 8-32 machine thread used on outlet box screw holes, device mounting yokes and cover plates. At 32 threads per inch and 3/4 in. long, it gives extra reach for mounting through plaster rings or box extenders where the stock screw is too short.
2) What size Phillips driver do I need for these 8-32 flat head screws?
A #2 Phillips. The recess is 0.182 in. diameter, 0.11 in. deep and 0.03 in. wide, which is the standard #2 geometry. Using a #1 will cam out and chew the recess.
3) How much load will an 8-32 steel zinc machine screw take?
850 lb minimum tensile, with the screws hardened to Rockwell B70 to B100 and made from AISI 1006 to 1022 low carbon steel. That is ample for device mounting, cover plates, strut fittings and panel work, but it is not a graded structural fastener, so don't substitute it where a drawing calls out a specific SAE or ASTM grade.
4) Is zinc plated steel okay for outdoor or damp locations?
The JFMP85 is zinc plated carbon steel, which is a dry interior finish. It handles normal indoor humidity in panels, boxes and equipment rooms, but in wet locations, outdoors, or anywhere washdown or coastal salt is involved the plating will eventually give up and the steel underneath rusts. Specify a stainless 8-32 machine screw for those openings.
5) Can I use these screws on a federally funded job with domestic sourcing requirements?
No. The JFMP85 machine screws are not Buy American compliant and are not ARRA compliant, with multiple countries of origin. On a job carrying domestic preference language you will need a fastener with documented US origin.
6) Do these 8-32 Phillips flat head screws meet a dimensional spec I can put on a submittal?
Yes. Head, recess and thread dimensions follow ASME B18.6.3-1998 for machine screws, with threads to ANSI/ASME B1.1, so the part can be called out on a spec sheet by standard rather than by brand. Gaging diameter is 0.267 with protrusion 0.023 to 0.039 above gage, which is how the thread fit is verified.
7) How are Metallics JFMP85 screws packaged and what is the minimum I can buy?
They ship in a jar of 100, and 100 is the order minimum. The jar comes in at 0.44 lbs, which makes it easy to keep a few on the truck or in the MRO crib without loose screws rolling around a drawer.
8) What trades actually use an 8-32 flat head machine screw this size?
It is stocked for the electrical, plumbing, and heating and air conditioning trades. Typical uses are flush mounting devices, cover plates, panel trim, control enclosures and sheet metal brackets where the head has to sit down in a countersunk hole and not catch on anything.
