Metallics JFMP48 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will a 10-32 x 3/4 in. machine screw thread into a standard electrical box or device yoke?
Yes. 10-32 is the standard thread used for device mounting and grounding in steel outlet boxes, and the Metallics JFMP48 is cut to 32 threads per inch in UNF form to the ANSI/ASME B1.1 thread standard, so it will run into a tapped 10-32 hole in a box, yoke, or ground lug. The 3/4 in. length gives extra thread engagement past flush, which helps on deep-tapped ears but may bottom out in shallow blind holes.
2) Do these Metallics screws meet Buy American or ARRA requirements for a public project?
No. The JFMP48 is not Buy American compliant and is not ARRA compliant, with multiple countries of origin. On a federally funded or domestic-preference job you will need a domestically sourced 10-32 flat head machine screw instead.
3) What size Phillips bit do I need for these 10-32 flat head screws?
A #2 Phillips. The recess is 0.198 in. across and 0.124 in. deep with a 0.032 in. slot width, which is the standard #2 pocket. Using a #1 will cam out and chew the recess; a #3 will not seat to the bottom.
4) How many screws come in a jar of Metallics JFMP48, and can I buy fewer?
They ship in a jar of 100, and 100 is the order minimum, so the jar is the smallest unit. Each jar weighs 0.6 lbs. Metallics does make other sizes and quantities in the FM and FMP series available by request.
5) How much load will a 10-32 steel zinc machine screw hold?
The JFMP48 is rated at 1200 lb minimum tensile. It is made from AISI 1006 to 1022 low carbon steel at Rockwell B70 to B100 hardness. That is a general purpose fastener, fine for mounting devices, covers, plates, and brackets, but it is not a graded structural bolt and should not be substituted for one on a load path.
6) Are these machine screws made to a recognized dimensional standard so they interchange with other brands?
They are produced to ASME B18.6.3-1998 for head and body dimensions and ANSI/ASME B1.1 for the UNF thread form, which is why a 10-32 x 3/4 flat head Phillips from the FM and FMP series will drop into the same prep as any other screw built to those standards. Gaging diameter is 0.313 with head protrusion of 0.025 to 0.042 above the gage, the normal check for a conforming flat head.
7) Flat head or pan head for mounting a cover plate or panel?
Use the flat head when the fastener has to finish flush or below the surface and the part is countersunk for it, such as a recessed panel, trim, or anywhere a protruding head would interfere. If the hole is a plain drilled hole with a flat face around it, a pan or round head carries the clamp load better because a flat head in an uncountersunk hole bears only on the edge. The JFMP48 is the flat head Phillips version at 10-32 x 3/4 in.
