Metallics JRM11SLT – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will an 8-32 x 5/16 in. machine screw work for mounting a device or cover plate in a standard electrical box?
8-32 is the standard thread used on outlet box device and cover plate screws, and the Metallics JRM11SLT is an 8-32 x 5/16 in. round head screw with 32 threads per inch. At 5/16 in. of length it is short, so it suits thin plates and shallow tapped ears where a longer screw would bottom out or run past the thread. For deeper standoffs or mounting through a thicker plaster ring, step up to a longer 8-32.
2) Are these zinc plated steel screws suitable for outdoor or damp locations?
These are AISI 1006 to 1022 carbon steel with a zinc finish. Zinc plating handles dry indoor and occasionally damp service, but it is sacrificial and will corrode in sustained wet, coastal, or washdown conditions. For exterior boxes, roof curbs, or chemical exposure, specify a stainless 8-32 machine screw instead.
3) Will a 5/16 in. long 8-32 screw hold a two gang plate or a thicker cover?
5/16 in. is a short grip. Subtract the thickness of what you are fastening and very little thread is left to engage the tapped hole, so on a standard thin wall plate you get only a few threads of bite. For thicker covers, weatherproof lids, or anything with a gasket, order a longer 8-32 round head rather than stacking washers under this one.
4) How strong are the Metallics JRM 8-32 machine screws?
Tensile strength is 60,000 psi minimum with a hardness of Rockwell B70 to B100. That is standard low carbon steel machine screw strength, fine for device mounting, plates, brackets, and general fastening into tapped holes. It is not a structural or high tensile fastener, so don't substitute it where a graded cap screw is called out on the drawing.
5) Do these Metallics machine screws meet Buy American or ARRA requirements for a federal job?
The JRM11SLT is flagged compliant for both ARRA and Buy American in the manufacturer data, with country of origin listed as China. If your specification requires domestic melt and manufacture rather than the ARRA compliance flag, verify the wording of your contract clause against that origin before submitting.
6) How are these 8-32 screws packaged, and what is the minimum I can order?
They ship in a jar, with a minimum order quantity of 100 count. Total packaged weight is 0.34 lbs. Buying by the jar is the normal move for a service van or a shop drawer, since 8-32 is the size that disappears fastest on device work.
7) Is the JRM11SLT a combination drive screw or slotted only?
Slotted only. Metallics does offer combination drive machine screws, but the JRM11SLT round head takes a flat blade in a single slot measuring 0.045 to 0.054 in. wide. If your crew runs Phillips bits in a driver, a combo head version will be faster than this one.
