Metallics JRM136 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Do Metallics JRM136 machine screws meet Buy American or ARRA requirements for a public project?
No. The JRM136 is not Buy American compliant and is not ARRA compliant, with country of origin listed as multiple. If your job carries a domestic sourcing clause, these will not satisfy it.
2) What driver do I need for these combo head machine screws?
They take either a flat blade or a #2 Phillips. The head is a combo drive, slotted and Phillips in the same recess, so whichever is already in your pouch works. Slot width runs 0.045 to 0.054 inch and slot depth 0.058 to 0.077 inch, so a standard cabinet-tip flat blade seats fine.
3) Is the round head on the JRM136 going to sit flush, or does it stand proud of the surface?
It stands proud. A round head is a domed, non-countersinking head: head width runs 0.287 to 0.309 inch and head height 0.107 to 0.12 inch, so it sits on top of the part and bears on the surface. If you need the fastener flush in a countersunk hole, you want a flat head machine screw instead, not this one.
4) Are Metallics JRM136 zinc plated screws OK for outdoor or damp locations?
These are carbon steel with a zinc finish, which is a plated coating meant for dry indoor service. Zinc plating gives limited corrosion protection and will eventually rust in wet, washdown, or exterior exposure. For outdoors, coastal, or damp locations, specify a stainless 8-32 machine screw instead.
5) How strong are these screws? I need to know if they will hold a mounting bracket.
The JRM136 is rated at 60,000 psi minimum tensile strength with a hardness of Rockwell B70 to B100, made from AISI 1006 to 1022 low carbon steel. That is standard commercial machine screw material, fine for mounting devices, covers, plates, and light brackets. It is not a graded structural fastener, so for load-bearing or high-torque connections step up to a Grade 5 or Grade 8 bolt.
6) Is a machine screw the right fastener here, or do I need a self-tapping screw?
A machine screw like the JRM136 has a uniform 32 pitch thread with no point, so it needs a pre-tapped hole or a mating nut. It will not cut its own thread in sheet metal or wood. If you are fastening into unthreaded sheet metal, use a self-drilling or sheet metal screw; if you are going into a tapped device yoke, box ear, or threaded strut nut, the 8-32 machine screw is what the hole is cut for.
7) How do Metallics JRM136 screws come packaged, and is there a minimum order?
They come in a jar of 100, and 100 count is the order minimum. Handy for a service van or a shop drawer rather than a bulk box.
8) Will a worn Phillips bit strip the recess on these combo screws?
The Phillips recess is cut to 0.165 to 0.178 inch diameter, 0.075 to 0.101 inch deep, with a 0.03 inch recess width and a gaging penetration depth of 0.064 to 0.090 inch, so a sharp #2 bit seats properly. If the bit is worn and starts to cam out, the combo head gives you a second chance with a flat blade in the slot, which is the main practical reason to buy a combo instead of a straight Phillips screw.
