Metallics JRM18 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Do these Metallics screws meet Buy American or ARRA requirements for a government job?
No. The JRM18 is not Buy American compliant and is not ARRA compliant, with country of origin listed as multiple. On a federally funded project with domestic sourcing language in the spec, these will not qualify.
2) Can I drive the JRM18 combo screw with a Phillips bit, or do I need a flat blade?
Either one. The head is a combo, slotted and Phillips in the same recess, so a flat blade or a #2 Phillips both seat. Metallics calls out #2 as the driver size. Handy when one tech is on a cordless with a Phillips bit and the next is using a flat screwdriver out of a pouch.
3) How much room does the round head on these 8-32 screws take up above the surface?
Head height runs 0.107 to 0.12 in. and head width 0.287 to 0.309 in., so the dome sits roughly an eighth of an inch proud with a head just under 5/16 across. If you need the head flush or sub-flush in a countersunk plate, a round head is the wrong profile; go flat or oval head instead.
4) Are the Metallics JRM18 screws strong enough for structural or load-bearing use?
These are low-carbon steel machine screws, AISI 1006 to 1022, with 60,000 psi minimum tensile and hardness in the Rockwell B70 to B100 band. That is standard machine screw material for mounting hardware, devices and covers. For a load-rated or graded bolted connection, specify a graded hex cap screw or a socket screw instead.
5) Is zinc plated steel okay for outdoor or damp locations, or should I use stainless?
The JRM18 is zinc plated steel. Zinc plating handles dry interior and normally dry service well, and it is what most device and panel screws use. For wet locations, exterior work, or anywhere with washdown or coastal exposure, move to a stainless 8-32 machine screw in the same size.
6) Is a 3/8 inch machine screw long enough, or will it bottom out before it grips?
3/8 inch of length gives you only a thin stack of material to work with, so it suits a cover plate, a strap, or a bracket onto a tapped hole or a nut right behind it. If you are going through a plate plus a spacer or a mud ring extension, step up to a longer 8-32 in the same series; Metallics lists other sizes in the JRM line.
7) How are Metallics JRM18 machine screws packaged and what is the smallest quantity?
They come in a jar of 100, and 100 is the order minimum. Useful on a service van or a shop bench where you are pulling a few at a time rather than opening a bulk box.
8) What does the slot and Phillips recess geometry measure on these combo screws?
Slot width is 0.045 to 0.054 in. with a slot depth of 0.058 to 0.077 in. The Phillips side has a recess diameter of 0.165 to 0.178 in., recess width 0.03 in., recess depth 0.075 to 0.101 in., and gaging penetration of 0.064 to 0.090 in. A #2 Phillips is the correct bit for that recess, and a 3/16 class cabinet blade seats in the slot.
