Metallics JRM20 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will the Metallics JRM20 machine screw thread into a 10-32 tapped hole in a device box or mounting bracket?
Yes. The JRM20 is a 10-32 machine screw, 32 threads per inch, which is the standard thread used on electrical device boxes, plaster rings, and mounting brackets. Shank length is 3/8 inch, so it works where the tapped hole or stacked material behind the head is shallow. Material is zinc plated steel.
2) Can I drive the Metallics JRM20 combo screw with a Phillips bit, or does it need a flat blade?
Either one. The JRM20 has a combination head, slotted and Phillips in the same recess, so whatever driver is already in your pouch will turn it. For the Phillips side use a #2 bit. The slot measures 0.05 to 0.06 inch wide and 0.065 to 0.087 inch deep; the Phillips recess runs 0.182 to 0.195 inch in diameter. That dual drive is the reason electricians stock combos for panel and device work rather than carrying two screw types.
3) How do these Metallics 10-32 screws come packaged, and what is the minimum I can buy?
They ship in a jar of 100, and 100 is the order minimum. Jar weight is 0.48 lbs. That is the usual MRO stocking quantity for a van or shop drawer, so if you only need a handful for one box you are still buying the full jar.
4) Are these machine screws strong enough for structural or load bearing use?
The JRM20 is rated at 60,000 psi minimum tensile strength with a hardness of Rockwell B70 to B100, made from AISI 1006 to 1022 low carbon steel. That is standard commercial machine screw material, fine for mounting devices, covers, plates, brackets and equipment. It is not a graded structural bolt, so for load bearing connections specify a graded hex bolt instead.
5) Is zinc plated steel okay for outdoor or damp locations, or should I use stainless?
The JRM20 is zinc plated steel, which is a dry indoor finish. Zinc gives moderate corrosion resistance for panel interiors, device boxes, and conditioned mechanical rooms. For exterior, wet location, coastal, or washdown work, step up to a stainless 10-32 round head combo screw rather than the zinc version.
6) Do these Metallics screws meet Buy American or ARRA requirements for a government job?
No. The JRM20 is not Buy American compliant and is not ARRA compliant, with country of origin listed as multiple. If your project carries a domestic sourcing requirement, this screw will not satisfy it.
7) What trades actually use the Metallics JRM20 10-32 combo screw?
It is stocked for electrical, plumbing, heating and air conditioning work. Typical uses are securing device plates, box covers, plaster rings, panel components, and equipment brackets where a 10-32 tapped hole is already present. The combo head is what makes it a van-stock item, since one screw covers both drivers on the job.
8) Can I get this 10-32 combo screw in a longer length or a bigger quantity?
The JRM20 itself is fixed at 10-32 x 3/8 inch in a 100 count jar. Metallics builds the JRM series in other diameters, lengths, and pack quantities, available by request, so if 3/8 inch bottoms out before it clamps, ask for the longer length in the same round head combo pattern.
