Viega 90080 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What does P x FTG mean on the Viega MegaPress 90080 45 degree elbow?
P x FTG means one end is a press socket and the other is a fitting (street) end. The press end slips over the outside of the pipe and gets crimped; the FTG end is sized to slide into another fitting's press socket. That is what makes the 90080 a street elbow, so you can change direction 45 degrees without adding a short nipple between two fittings. Both ends are 1/2 inch.
2) Is the Viega 90080 MegaPress elbow carbon steel or stainless?
316 stainless steel. That matters on two counts: 316 is the alloy you want where there is chloride exposure or a corrosive atmosphere, and it is the right body material for MegaPressG or stainless pipe runs rather than a zinc-coated carbon steel fitting. Made in Germany.
3) Will a MegaPress fitting work on 1/2 inch black iron pipe I already have in the building?
MegaPress is a press system for iron pipe size schedule pipe, so the 90080 presses onto 1/2 inch IPS pipe without threading or welding. You press onto the existing pipe OD, which means no cutting threads in place and no hot work. You do need the MegaPress jaw or ring for 1/2 inch in a compatible press tool; the fitting itself includes the sealing element.
4) What is Smart Connect on the Viega 90080 and why would an inspector care?
Smart Connect is a deliberate feature in the sealing element that lets an unpressed connection leak visibly during pressure testing. On a riser or a long branch, that is how you find the joint someone walked past with the tool. It does not replace pressing, it just makes a missed crimp show itself at test rather than after the ceiling closes.
5) Is the Viega 90080 a 1/2 inch fitting on both ends?
Yes, 1/2 inch on both the press end and the FTG end, so it changes direction without changing size. If you need to reduce at the turn, this is not the part; order a reducing fitting or a separate reducer ahead of the elbow.
