Viega 90085 MegaPress 45° street elbow Smart Connect technology 316 stainless steel, 3/4'' x 3/4''

P x FTG means one end is a press socket that accepts 3/4 inch pipe, and the other end is a fitting (street) end sized to slip into another 3/4 inch press socket. That is what makes it a street elbow: you can press it directly into the next fitting instead of adding a short nipple between them. Both sides are 3/4 inch.

MegaPress fittings press onto 3/4 inch iron pipe size steel pipe, which covers black, galvanized and carbon steel. The 90085 is the 316 stainless steel version, so it is the one to use where the pipe or the environment calls for corrosion resistance rather than a carbon steel body.

A street elbow saves a joint. With a press end on one side and a fitting end on the other, the 90085 goes straight into the socket of an adjacent valve, coupling or tee, so you avoid cutting and pressing a short piece of pipe between the two. Use the press x press version when you are joining two runs of pipe instead of landing directly on another fitting. Tight mechanical rooms and close offsets are where the street version earns its place.

Smart Connect is Viega's feature that leaves an unpressed connection deliberately leaking during pressure testing, so an installer can see which joints were missed before the system is put in service. On the 90085 it means you can pressure test the line and find a skipped press rather than discovering it after the walls close up.

The body is 316 stainless steel, the grade chosen for chloride and corrosive exposure. Keep in mind the fitting only protects itself, not the pipe: pressing a stainless elbow onto carbon steel pipe still leaves the pipe as the weak point in a wet or corrosive environment. Match the pipe to the service and use the 316 body where the fitting itself would otherwise corrode.

The elbow ships as the fitting with its sealing element in place. You still need a press tool with the correct MegaPress jaw or ring for 3/4 inch, and the pipe end must be cut square, deburred and marked for insertion depth before pressing. No solder, no flux, no threading.

The fitting measures 3.705 inches long, 2.583 inches wide and 1.496 inches high, and weighs 0.353 lbs. Worth checking against the clearance you have for the press tool jaw, since the jaw needs room to close square on the socket, not just room for the fitting.

Made in Germany. That matters on public and institutional work where country of origin has to be documented on the submittal, so it is a value worth recording with the part number 90085.
