Viega 91665 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What pipe sizes does the Viega MegaPress 91665 tee connect?
The MegaPress tee model 91665 is a reducing tee sized 1-1/2 inch x 1-1/2 inch x 3/4 inch. The run stays 1-1/2 inch on both ends and the branch outlet drops to 3/4 inch, so you can tap a 3/4 inch takeoff off a 1-1/2 inch line without adding a separate bushing.
2) Is the Viega 91665 MegaPress tee carbon steel or stainless?
It is 316 stainless steel, not carbon steel. That matters if you are branching a line in a corrosive or wash-down environment, or on a system where carbon steel MegaPress would be the wrong metallurgy. Pair it with 316 stainless press fittings and valves on the same run rather than mixing metals at the joint.
3) Can I use the Viega 91665 tee on copper or PEX?
No. MegaPress stainless fittings press onto steel pipe, and this one is a 316 stainless body sized for 1-1/2 inch and 3/4 inch pipe. For copper tube you want a copper press system such as Viega ProPress, and for PEX a PureFlow fitting. Pressing a steel-pipe fitting onto copper or PEX will not seal.
4) What does Smart Connect do on a MegaPress stainless tee, and why should an inspector care?
Smart Connect is the unpressed-joint feature Viega builds into the sealing element. An unpressed connection leaks visibly during pressure testing instead of holding temporarily and failing later, so a missed press shows up on the test rather than inside a finished wall. On a three-outlet fitting like the 1-1/2 x 1-1/2 x 3/4 tee, that is three separate presses to verify, which is exactly where one gets skipped.
5) Does the Viega MegaPress tee come with the sealing element installed, or do I order gaskets separately?
The 91665 arrives as a complete press tee with its Smart Connect sealing element already in the three sockets, so nothing is added at the joint. What you do supply is the press tool with 1-1/2 inch and 3/4 inch jaws or rings, plus pipe that is cut square and deburred before insertion.
6) Where is the Viega 91665 MegaPress tee manufactured?
Made in Germany. If you are submitting on a job with country-of-origin documentation requirements, that is the origin on record for the 91665 stainless MegaPress tee.
