1) Does the Altronix ALTV244UL run off standard 120V building power?
Yes. The ALTV244UL is a 120V line-voltage unit, so it wires to ordinary 115/120VAC branch power at the camera head end or in an equipment closet. No step-down transformer ahead of it is needed.
2) How much load can the ALTV244UL carry across its camera runs?
Rated output current is 3A, and that figure is the total the supply shares across its outputs, not per output. Add up the draw of every camera or device you intend to hang on it and leave headroom rather than loading it to the rated figure.
3) I need 12 or 24VDC for maglocks and electric strikes. Is this the right Altronix unit?
If your locks need regulated DC, look at a DC supply instead. Any of those is the better match for door hardware loads.
4) Can I use the Altronix ALTV244UL to run a motorized latch retraction exit device?
It is not the right choice. The ALTV244UL is an AC output supply for commercial CCTV style loads on a 120V input. Motorized latch retraction draws a heavy inrush and wants a supply designed for it, such as the BEST RPSMLR2 Series power supply for motorized latch retraction exit devices. For delayed egress hardware, the BEST PS161-6 is built for delayed egress exit devices with 120V input, 12/24V output and 6A capacity.
5) What if 3 amps isn't enough for my camera count?
Step up to a higher-output supply. The SDC 634 is a 4 amp regulated and filtered low voltage supply, the BEST PS161-6 gives 6A from a 120V input, and the Securitron AQS1210 delivers 10A at 12VDC. Sizing by total connected load, not device count, is what keeps you out of trouble.
6) I just need a small supply for one electric strike, not a multi-output box. What else is there?
For single-device work, smaller units make more sense than a multi-output enclosure: the Command Access PS1 is a 24VDC linear supply with 1 amp output, the SDC 620 is a 1 amp regulated and filtered supply with dual voltage selection, and the ROFU 9126T is a plug-in mini supply at 12VDC 1.5A with time delay.
7) I only need to power one device - is the Altronix ALTV244UL overkill?
Likely yes if the device is DC and single. The ALTV244UL is a four output unit rated 3A at 28VAC. For a single low draw DC device, the Command Access PS1 Series is a 24VDC linear supply with 1 Amp output, the SDC 620 Series is a 1 Amp regulated and filtered supply with dual voltage selection, and the Securitron AQD1 is a 12/24VDC 1 Amp switching supply. Choose by whether your device wants linear or switching DC.
8) What looks like a substitute for the Altronix ALTV244UL but will not do the same job?
Two to watch. The ROFU 10305-LA/10306-LA is a power transfer hinge rated 1.5A at 42V - it moves power through the door edge, it does not generate it. The Command Access CAT Field Tester is a portable 12-24VDC tester that runs off DeWalt, Makita and Milwaukee batteries, meant for bench and field checks rather than permanent installation. Neither replaces a fixed four output 115VAC input supply.
9) Is the ALTV244UL meant for commercial security work or light residential use?
It is classed as a commercial power supply, which is what you want for building CCTV and access control infrastructure in an enclosure-mounted install rather than a plug-in residential adapter.
10) Is there a higher amperage alternative if my camera run exceeds what the Altronix ALTV244UL supplies?
The ALTV244UL is rated 3A at 28VAC. For larger DC loads the Securitron AQS1210 is a 12VDC 10 Amp switching supply, and the Securitron AQL4 gives 12/24VDC at 4/3 Amp. Note these are DC output, so they fit DC cameras and devices rather than AC powered ones.
