1) How much current does the DPS3 supply, and will it run a couple of maglocks?
Rated output is 2.25A. That is enough headroom for a small access control opening or two, a maglock or electric strike plus a reader and a rex, but add up the holding current of every device on the circuit before you commit. If your load runs past that, step up to a larger supply such as the RCI DKPS-2A with eight outputs or a 4 amp class unit like the SDC 634.
2) Will the Altronix DPS3 run a motorized latch retraction exit device?
Motorized latch retraction draws a high inrush and is normally fed from a supply built for it, such as the BEST RPSMLR2 Series power supply for motorized latch retraction exit devices. For delayed egress exit devices, the BEST PS161-6 is the purpose-built unit at 12/24V output with 6A capacity. The Altronix DPS3 is a general power supply/charger at 6/12/24VDC, 2.5A, suited to CCTV, fire alarm and general security loads.
3) I need a 12/24VDC field-selectable supply around 2 amps for an access control opening - what are my options besides the Altronix DPS3?
Two peers sit in the same band. The Von Duprin PS902 is a base power supply rated 2A at 12/24VDC, field selectable for access control, and is listed as Grade 1. The Command Access PS204/204B is a linear power supply with 2A at 24VDC and battery backup. The Altronix DPS3 covers 6/12/24VDC at 2.5A, adding the 6VDC selection neither of those lists. All three are 120V-class line-powered units.
4) My load draws more than the Altronix DPS3 can supply - what should I step up to?
For heavier draw, the SDC 634 Series is a 4 amp regulated and filtered low voltage supply with dual voltage selection, and the Securitron AQL4 is a switching power supply at 12/24VDC 4/3Amp. Above that, the BEST PS161-6 is a 120V input, 12/24V output supply with 6A capacity, and the Securitron AQS1210 delivers 12 VDC at 10 Amp on a single voltage. The Altronix DPS3 tops out at 2.5A across its 6/12/24VDC selections.
5) Which of these look like substitutes for the Altronix DPS3 but are not?
Three to rule out. The ROFU 10305-LA/10306-LA is a power transfer hinge rated 1.5A at 42V - it carries power through the door, it does not generate it. The Command Access CAT Field Tester is a portable 12-24VDC unit that runs off DeWalt, Makita and Milwaukee batteries, meant for bench and field testing rather than permanent installation. The Detex 10-800 is a universal logic controller that happens to include a 120VAC/24VDC power supply and battery backup, so you are buying control logic with it. The Altronix DPS3 is a line-powered power supply/charger with 6/12/24VDC selection at 2.5A.
6) What input voltage does the Altronix DPS3 run on?
It is a 120V nominal AC input product, wired through its transformer. That is standard North American line power, so no step-down panel work is needed on a typical commercial building feed.
