Altronix SMP5 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can the Altronix SMP5 run 12VDC and 24VDC access control hardware?
The SMP5 switching board is selectable for 6, 12 or 24VDC, so it will feed 12VDC strikes, maglocks and readers as well as 24VDC devices. The voltage you choose drives the transformer choice: T2428100 for 12VDC, T2428175 for 24VDC. It is one voltage at a time, not three simultaneous rails.
2) How much current does the Altronix SMP5 board supply, and will it carry a bank of maglocks?
Rated output is 4A. Add up the holding current of every device on the circuit, including locks, readers and any auxiliary devices, and keep the total under 4A with headroom. A handful of maglocks at roughly half an amp each is within range; a large opening count is not, and you would step up to a higher-amperage supply.
3) I need multiple programmable door functions, not just DC power - what should I look at instead of the SMP5?
The Altronix SMP5 is a switching power supply board; its job is converting 120V input to a 6, 12, or 24VDC output at 4A, and it does not carry programmable logic. If the opening calls for programmable sequencing - electric strike, mag lock, and operator firing in a set order - the Command Access DS1-X multi-function door sequencing relay board offers 13 programmable functions. It still needs a DC source, which is the role the SMP5 fills.
4) What input power does the Altronix SMP5 need at the panel?
It runs off standard 120V line power through its matching transformer, so a dedicated 120VAC circuit at the equipment location is what the electrician needs to provide. The low voltage side is what you select as 6, 12 or 24VDC.
5) For a commercial access control panel, which board handles voltage selection across 6, 12, and 24VDC devices?
The Altronix SMP5 is the piece that sets the supply voltage: it is a commercial switching power supply board selectable for 6VDC, 12VDC, or 24VDC output at 4A, so one board covers hardware at any of those three voltages depending on the matching transformer used with it. The Command Access DS1+ and DS1-X boards operate on 12-24VDC but are sequencing and relay logic rather than voltage sources, so they do not set the system voltage themselves.
6) Is the Altronix SMP5 suitable for a commercial building install or is it a residential-grade part?
It is a commercial-rated power supply board, intended for professional access control and security system work rather than residential use. It is sold as a bare board, so it is meant to be mounted inside an enclosure or an existing cabinet by an integrator.
