Altronix SAV4D – Frequently Asked Questions

1) How many cameras can I run off an Altronix SAV4D power supply?
The SAV4D splits 12VDC across four PTC protected Class 2 outputs, so it feeds up to four camera runs from one enclosure. The ceiling is the total, not the per-output rating: 5A maximum total current shared by all four outputs. Add up the draw of every camera plus any IR illuminators or heaters on those runs and keep the sum under 5A, otherwise you need a second supply or a higher current unit.
2) Can I use the Altronix SAV4D to power a maglock or electrified exit device instead of cameras?
The SAV4D is built to provide 12VDC via four Class 2 PTC protected power limited outputs for powering surveillance cameras. Door hardware loads are generally spec'd to supplies made for them: the Von Duprin PS902 is a 2A 12/24 VDC field selectable base power supply for access control, the BEST PS161-6 is a 120V input, 12/24V output, 6A supply for delayed egress exit devices, and the BEST RPSMLR2 is made for motorized latch retraction exit devices, which have high inrush. Match the supply to the device type rather than assuming a camera supply covers it.
3) My devices run on 24VDC - what takes the place of the SAV4D?
The SAV4D outputs 12VDC only. For 24VDC loads, the SDC 634 Series is a 4 amp regulated and filtered supply with dual voltage selection, the Securitron AQL4 is a switching supply at 12/24VDC 4/3Amp, and the Command Access PS1 Series is a 24VDC linear supply with 1 amp output. Dual-voltage units let you set the rail to suit the device; the SAV4D is fixed at 12VDC across its four outputs.
4) What is the closest equivalent to the Altronix SAV4D if I need 12VDC at 5A for cameras?
The Aiphone AC-PS1250 is a 12V DC 5A UL listed power supply, matching the SAV4D's 12VDC output and 5A total current. The difference is distribution: the SAV4D provides four Class 2 rated PTC protected power limited outputs for powering surveillance cameras, so each camera run is individually protected, while the AC-PS1250 is built for AC Series access control kits. If you are feeding multiple cameras from one box, the four-output arrangement is the reason to stay with the SAV4D.
5) I need more than four camera drops from one power supply - what should I use instead of the SAV4D?
The RCI DKPS-2A offers 8 outputs at 12/24VDC and 2A for access control systems, so it doubles the drop count but shares 2A across them. The SAV4D distributes 12VDC across four PTC protected Class 2 outputs with 5A max total current, so it carries more total load over fewer runs. Pick by whether your limit is the number of camera home runs or the total amperage they draw.
6) What does PTC protected mean on a CCTV power supply, and do I still need fuses?
PTC means each of the four outputs has a self resetting thermal device rather than a glass fuse. A short or overload on one camera run trips that output only, and it restores by itself once the fault is cleared, so you are not driving back to a site to swap a fuse. The outputs are Class 2 rated and power limited, which is what most low voltage camera wiring is installed under.
7) I need more than 5A total for a larger camera system. What else is there?
Once your combined camera load passes 5A the SAV4D is undersized. For a straight 12VDC step up, the Securitron AQS1210 switching supply is 12VDC at 10 amps. If you want more output points rather than more current, the RCI DKPS-2A gives 8 outputs at 12/24VDC, 2A.
8) Does the SAV4D give me battery backup, or do I need a different unit?
The SAV4D ships as an enclosure with four PTC Class 2 outputs. If standby power is part of the spec, the Adams Rite PS-1 is a regulated 1 amp 12/24 volt DC supply with battery backup, the Command Access PS204/204B is a linear supply with 2A at 24VDC and battery backup, and the Detex 10-800 Series pairs a 120VAC/24VDC supply and battery backup with a universal logic controller. Those carry lower output current than the SAV4D's 5A, so size the backup unit to the camera load before swapping.
9) I only need to power one camera or one device - is there a simpler option than the SAV4D?
For a single low-draw device, the ROFU 9126T is a plug in mini power supply rated 12VDC at 1.5A with time delay, and the Securitron AQD1 is a switching supply at 12/24 VDC 1 Amp. Both are single-output units. The SAV4D is the multi-drop choice, providing 12VDC through four Class 2 PTC protected outputs at 5A max total current in a grey enclosure, which only earns its keep when several cameras share one power location.
10) I have a large camera count on one head end - what goes above the SAV4D?
The Securitron AQS1210 is a switching power supply at 12 VDC 10Amp, double the SAV4D's 5A max total current at the same 12VDC rail. The tradeoff is distribution: the SAV4D breaks its output into four Class 2 rated PTC protected power limited runs, so a fault on one camera run does not pull the others down. Larger single-rail supplies usually need a separate distribution board to get the same per-run protection.
11) Is the SAV4D suitable for a commercial building install, and does it come in a housing?
Yes on both counts. It is a commercial rated unit and it comes in a grey steel style enclosure, so it mounts as a wall unit in an IDF closet or head end rather than needing a separate box. Nothing further is supplied beyond the enclosure and the four PTC Class 2 outputs, so field wiring, conduit fittings and any mounting anchors come from your own stock.
12) Is the Command Access CAT Field Tester a substitute for the SAV4D on a permanent camera install?
No. The CAT Field Tester is a portable 12-24VDC power supply that runs off DeWalt, Makita and Milwaukee batteries, intended for bench and field testing rather than fixed service. The SAV4D is a commercial fixed-install unit supplied in an enclosure with four PTC protected Class 2 outputs running on 120V, so it is the one that stays in the wall.
