American Standard M962946-0020A – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What exactly is the American Standard M962946 Portsmouth cross handle replacement part?
It's a replacement faucet handle, the cross-style handle used on American Standard Portsmouth faucets. It ships as the handle itself, ordered under manufacturer part number M962946-0020A in chrome. If you're rebuilding a Portsmouth faucet, this covers the handle only, not the stem, cartridge, or escutcheon.
2) Will the Portsmouth cross handle fit a different American Standard faucet line, like Colony or Heritage?
Treat it as a Portsmouth part. It is catalogued specifically as a Portsmouth cross handle, and American Standard handle broaching and stem splines vary by faucet family, so a handle from one line is not a general-purpose fit. Confirm your faucet is a Portsmouth before ordering.
3) What finish does the Portsmouth cross handle come in?
Chrome is the finish offered, under part number M962946-0020A. If the other handle on your two-handle Portsmouth faucet is polished chrome, this will match it; if your trim is brushed nickel or bronze, this handle won't blend in.
4) I have a two-handle Portsmouth lavatory faucet and only the hot handle is broken. Do I have to buy both?
No. The M962946 Portsmouth cross handle is sold as an individual handle, so you can replace just the one that's damaged and leave the good one in place. Order a second one if you want both sides to age evenly, since a new chrome handle next to an older one can read slightly brighter.
5) Is this a cross handle or a lever handle for the Portsmouth faucet?
Cross handle, the four-spoke style you turn with a pinch grip rather than a single lever arm. Portsmouth trim is sold both ways, so if your existing handles are levers this is the wrong shape for your faucet.
6) For a property manager standardizing bathroom faucet repairs, is this handle a good stock item?
It's worth stocking if your units run American Standard Portsmouth faucets in chrome. Handles are the part guests and tenants break most often, and holding M962946-0020A on the shelf means a maintenance tech swaps a handle instead of pulling the whole faucet. Stock the matching Portsmouth cartridge or stem separately, since this part is the handle alone.
