American Standard Extender Square Body Spray - AMS-1660140

It mounts flush. The spray face stays recessed against the wall when the water is off and automatically extends when the water is turned on, then retracts again after shutoff. That keeps the wall clear in a tight shower or a tub/shower where someone could bump a fixed protruding spray.

No separate rough-in purchase is needed for the spray itself. The 1660140 Extender body spray ships with its rough-in kit and a plaster guard that protects the opening while the wall board and tile go in. Note this is a body spray only, not a shower valve, so the mixing valve and supply control are still separate items on the job.

Yes. The spray position adjusts up to 15 degrees in any direction, so you can angle it after the wall is finished rather than relying on getting the rough-in pitch exactly right. It also has variable spray settings, conventional, massage, and a combination of the two.

One-piece. There are no loose parts to keep track of or reassemble at the wall, which is the practical difference on a multi-unit or hotel job where several sprays go in per shower. The plaster guard comes off and the trim goes on.

They do different jobs. A body spray is a wall-mounted horizontal spray aimed at the torso and legs, usually installed in pairs or sets at staggered heights, and it is fed off its own valve outlet or a diverter. The Extender square body spray does not replace an overhead or handheld shower head, so most showers using them still carry a primary shower head on a separate outlet.

The spray face is made to wipe clean, and because it retracts flush when the water is off there is less exposed nozzle surface collecting scale between uses. For MRO crews cleaning shower walls on a schedule, that means wiping the face down with the wall rather than servicing a protruding head.
