American Standard M970224-0020A – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What exactly is the American Standard M970224 lift rod and knob, and what part of the faucet does it replace?
It is the vertical lift rod with its knob (the pull you grab behind the faucet spout) for an American Standard faucet pop-up drain assembly. It is the linkage piece only, not the drain body, tailpiece, or pivot rod. If your pop-up stopper still seals fine but the rod is bent, corroded, or the knob has snapped off, this is the replacement piece.
2) I manage apartments and just need the pull rod, not a whole new drain. Is this the right part?
Yes, for American Standard lavatory faucets. The M970224 is the lift rod and knob on its own, so you keep the existing pop-up drain body and stopper in the sink. It is a common repair when tenants snap the knob or the rod corrodes at the threads. If the stopper itself is not sealing or the pivot rod has failed, you need a drain assembly instead, not this rod.
3) What finishes does the American Standard M970224 lift rod come in?
Three: Chrome (M970224-0020A), Legacy Bronze (M970224-2780A), and Brushed Nickel (M970224-2950A). Order the one that matches the faucet body, since the rod and knob sit in plain view above the deck and a mismatched finish is obvious on a lavatory faucet.
4) Does the M970224 lift rod work with any brand of pop-up drain?
Treat it as an American Standard part for American Standard faucets. It is sold as the lift rod and knob for their pop-up assemblies, and rod diameter, thread, and knob style vary between manufacturers, so matching it to another brand's faucet is not something to assume. If the faucet is not American Standard, source the rod from that faucet's maker.
5) Do I need anything else to install the M970224 lift rod?
Normally no extra parts. The rod drops down through the hole in the faucet deck and clips into the clevis strap on the pivot rod under the sink, so you reuse the existing clevis and spring clip. Have the clip and strap in hand before you start; if either is broken or badly corroded, replace those separately, since they are not part of this rod and knob.
