American Standard M970120-0020A – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What exactly is American Standard part M970120-0020A?
It's the lift rod and knob for an American Standard faucet pop-up drain assembly, in chrome. The rod is the vertical stem that runs up through the back of the faucet body, and the knob is the finger pull on top that you lift to close the stopper. Order it by MPN M970120-0020A.
2) My sink stopper won't stay up any more. Do I need a whole new pop-up drain or just the lift rod?
If the drain body and stopper are sound and the problem is a bent, corroded, or stripped rod, or a knob that has come loose or gone missing, the rod and knob is the only piece you replace. This American Standard part covers just that part of the pop-up assembly. If the failure is in the stopper seat, the tailpiece, or the horizontal pivot rod and clevis under the sink, you need drain-body parts instead, not the lift rod.
3) What finish does the American Standard M970120 lift rod and knob come in?
Chrome only. If the rest of your faucet trim is brushed nickel, polished brass, or matte black, the knob will read as a visible mismatch since it sits on top of the deck where it is the first thing you see. For those installations look for the American Standard rod and knob in the matching finish for your faucet series.
4) Is this an American Standard faucet part or a drain-only part?
It is a faucet part. American Standard lists the M970120 rod and knob under faucet applications, as the lift control for the pop-up drain that the faucet operates. It mounts through the faucet body, not into the drain opening.
5) For a multi-unit building with chrome American Standard lavatory faucets, is the lift rod worth stocking on the truck?
It is one of the more common lavatory service calls, and chrome is the standard finish across most American Standard commercial lavatory trim, so a spare rod and knob (M970120-0020A) covers a bent or seized rod without pulling the faucet. Keep it paired with pivot rod and clevis stock, since the two failures often show up together on the same sink.
