American Standard M970146-0020A – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What is the American Standard M970146 screw and plug button used for?
It's a faucet repair fastener: a mounting screw paired with a snap-in plug button that covers the screw head once it's driven. On American Standard faucets the button is what hides the handle screw, so if yours is missing or the screw is stripped or corroded, this is the part that puts the handle back together and keeps the recess covered.
2) I manage apartments with American Standard chrome faucets. Is this the right part when tenants break off the handle cap?
Yes, for chrome trim. The M970146 kit covers the handle screw and its snap-in cover button, which is the piece that pops off and gets lost. Ordering it by part number M970146-0020A keeps every unit consistent rather than mixing generic buttons across the building.
3) Will this American Standard part work on a shower valve or a toilet, or is it faucet-only?
Faucet only. The M970146 screw and plug button is catalogued for faucet use, and screw length and button diameter are specific to that trim, so don't plan on it for shower handles or tank hardware.
