American Standard 6147162.002 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the American Standard Ultima 6147162 flush valve fit my toilet's top spud?
The Ultima 6147162 manual flushometer is built for flushometer bowls with a 1-1/2 inch (38 mm) exposed top spud. If the bowl on the wall has a smaller spud or a back spud connection, this is the wrong valve for it. Check the spud size at the bowl before ordering, since that connection is what the valve mates to.
2) My rough-in is shorter than 27 inches. Can I still use this Ultima flushometer?
Yes. The valve ships with a 27 inch (686 mm) rough-in and the pipe can be cut during installation, so it drops into shorter rough-ins as well. What it will not do is stretch, so 27 inches is the maximum centerline distance it covers.
3) Does this American Standard flushometer work if the supply comes in on the left side of the stall?
Either side works. The Ultima manual valve can be installed left- or right-handed, so one part number covers both stall layouts. For a property manager standardizing across a restroom group, that means you are not tracking two SKUs for mirrored stalls.
4) Is this a 1.6 gpf flush valve, and will it work on a 1.28 gpf water-saving bowl?
It flushes 1.6 gpf / 6.0 Lpf, which is the full-flush rating. Pair it with a bowl rated for 1.6 gallons. If your fixtures are 1.28 gpf high-efficiency bowls, you want a valve matched to that volume instead, because running 1.6 gallons through a 1.28 gpf bowl is more water than the bowl was designed around.
5) Our flushometers keep running on after the flush. Will this one fix that?
Run-on is usually the refill orifice in the diaphragm fouling up. This valve uses American Standard's DynaClean self-cleaning wiper spring, an integral spring that wipes the refill orifice on every flush to keep it clear. There is also a high back pressure vacuum breaker that helps stop dripping. It is a diaphragm-type valve, so the diaphragm remains the wear part over time.
6) Do diaphragm flush valves hold up in buildings with heavily chlorinated water?
That is exactly where diaphragms fail early, and it is what the EvoLast material in this valve addresses. The diaphragm is chlorine- and chloramine-resistant to resist premature deterioration, and the valve body uses a proprietary brass alloy that resists dezincification. For an MRO buyer on a chloraminated municipal supply, those two together are the difference between a rebuild every year and a rebuild on a normal cycle.
7) Is the American Standard 6147162 manual or sensor operated?
Manual, handle operated. If you are converting a restroom to touchless, this is not the valve, you want a sensor-operated flushometer instead. Manual stays the choice where you want no batteries or power at the fixture and a simpler service part.
8) What finish and part number do I order for the American Standard Ultima 27-inch rough-in flush valve?
Order model 6147162.002, the chrome finish. Chrome is the only finish this Ultima manual water closet valve is built in, so the part number is the whole decision. It is a toilet (water closet) valve at 1.6 gpf, not a urinal valve, so do not cross it onto a urinal fixture.
