TOTO THU493#CP – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Is the TOTO THU493 trip lever for a right-hand or left-hand tank?
Right hand. The THU493#CP is the right-hand trip lever handle assembly, meaning it mounts on the right side of the toilet tank as you face it. If your existing handle comes out of the left side of the tank, this is the wrong part and you need TOTO's left-hand trip lever instead. Handing on a TOTO trip lever is not reversible, so match the side before ordering.
2) I manage a building with a lot of TOTO toilets. Is one trip lever part number good for all of them?
No. TOTO uses different trip lever part numbers by tank model and by handing, and THU493#CP covers the right-hand chrome version only. Before you stock a box of them, pull the model number off the underside of the tank lid or the back of the tank on a sample of your fixtures. Buildings that were fitted out at one time usually standardize on a single tank model, in which case one part number covers the whole fleet.
3) What finish is the TOTO THU493#CP trip lever?
Polished chrome. TOTO's #CP suffix on the part number is the polished chrome finish code, so THU493#CP arrives chrome and will match chrome tank levers and chrome bath trim on the rest of the fixture. If the other handles in the building are brushed nickel or another TOTO finish, you'd want the matching finish code rather than #CP.
4) What exactly comes in a TOTO THU493 trip lever order, and do I need anything else to install it?
It's the complete trip lever handle assembly: the handle, the arm, and the mounting nut that secures it through the tank wall. It does not include the flapper, the flush valve, the chain, or the fill valve. In most swaps you reuse the existing chain and clip off the old arm, but if the chain is corroded or the flapper is leaking, order those separately at the same time so you're not making a second trip to the property.
5) The toilet handle is loose and the flush is weak. Is replacing the trip lever the fix?
Often yes, but check the chain first. A trip lever with a cracked plastic arm or a stripped mounting nut will feel loose and won't lift the flapper fully, and a new THU493 assembly restores that. If the arm and nut are solid and the handle still doesn't flush, the slack in the chain or a worn flapper is the more likely cause and a new lever won't help.
