ABH 0370-US32D – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will an ABH 0370 center hung pivot set carry a 500 lb door?
Yes. The ABH 0370 center hung pivot set is rated for doors up to 500 lbs, with a maximum door size of 42 x 102 inches. That is the ceiling on both counts, so a door heavier than 500 lbs or wider than 42 inches needs a different pivot. It is a heavy duty, commercial-rated set in stainless steel.
2) Do I have to order the ABH 0370 pivot left hand or right hand?
No handing to specify. The 0370 is non-handed, so the same set goes into a left or right swing door. That also means you can stock one set across a building instead of splitting inventory by hand.
3) What actually comes in the ABH 0370 pivot set, and can I buy just the top or bottom pivot?
The full 0370 set includes the 0340 top pivot (frame leaf and door leaf) plus the 0370B bottom pivot, which is everything needed to hang the door top and bottom. The pieces are also sold separately: 0340 Top Pivot Only, or 0370B Bottom Pivot Only. If you are replacing a worn bottom pivot on an existing ABH center hung door, order the 0370B alone rather than the whole set.
4) Can I use ABH pivots on a federal or state government job with domestic sourcing requirements?
Yes. The 0370 pivot set is BAA qualified, meaning it meets Buy American Act requirements. For a GSA, municipal, school district, or VA project where the spec calls for domestic sourcing, that qualification is stated on the product and does not need to be chased down with the manufacturer.
5) Is the BEST A3 pivot set a drop-in equivalent to the ABH 0370?
No - the two hang a door differently. The ABH 0370 is a center hung set that centers into the door thickness, while the BEST A3 System pivot set is an offset hung set, which carries the door on a pivot point set forward of the door face and requires the matching floor and frame prep for that geometry. Both are fire rated, so an A3 can hold a fire rated opening the way the 0370 does, but swapping between them is a prep change at the head and the floor, not a parts change. If the floor prep is already cut for a center hung pivot, stay with the 0370; if the opening is prepped offset, the A3 suits it.
6) Center hung or offset pivot: which do I need for a heavy commercial door?
Center hung means the pivot centers into the door thickness so the door rotates about an axis inside the door itself, and the leading edge swings both in and out of the opening. That is what you want for balanced weight distribution on a heavy door, and it is what makes double-acting and overhead-closer arrangements work. An offset pivot instead hangs the door with the pivot point set out from the door face, closer to how a hinge behaves, keeping the swing on one side. The ABH 0370 is the center hung, top-and-bottom configuration. If your frame is already prepped for offset hanging, the Calibre Door Closers PV1000 3/4 inch offset flush pivot set is an offset alternative.
7) Is the ABH 0370 pivot electrified, or can it pass power to the door?
No power transfer. The 0370 is a purely mechanical pivot set, listed as non-electronic. If the door needs power at the leaf for an electrified lock, exit device, or card reader, you will need a separate electric power transfer or a door loop; the pivot will not carry it.
8) What is the difference between the ABH 0370 and the BEST A3 pivot set?
Both are pivot sets and both are fire rated. The ABH 0370 is the center hung configuration, top and bottom, rated to 500 lb doors up to 42 x 102 inches in stainless steel. The BEST A3 System is an offset hung set, so it hangs the door on a different axis and needs frame and door prep to suit offset rather than center hung. Pick by what your opening is already prepped for: a center hung prep will not take an offset pivot without rework.
9) For a 3 hour rated heavy door, is there an alternative to the ABH 0370?
The ABH 0370 carries a 3 hour fire rating and is rated for doors up to 500 lbs in heavy duty commercial service. Among the alternatives, the BEST A3 System offset hung pivot set is also fire rated, so it is the one to look at when the opening is prepped offset rather than center hung. Match the door weight to whichever set you choose - the 500 lb figure is what makes the 0370 suitable for oversized and heavy commercial leaves - and verify the rating on the door and frame label matches the hours you need for the wall.
10) I only need to replace the worn bottom pivot - do I have to buy a whole set?
No. The ABH 0370 is sold as the complete set including the 0340 top and 0370B bottom, and also as the 0340 top pivot alone or the 0370B bottom pivot alone, so a single worn component can be replaced on its own. The alternatives are catalogued as sets - the BEST A3 System pivot set and the Calibre PV1000 offset flush pivot set - so a component-only replacement is the ABH route. Match the finish to the remaining pivot so the pair looks the same in the opening.
11) Which pivot set works for a Buy American Act government job?
The ABH 0370 is BAA qualified, which is what a government or municipal specification calls for on domestic sourcing. It is a stainless steel center hung set rated to 500 lbs with a 3 hour fire rating, so it answers the durability and fire clauses on the same submittal. When a submittal is rejected or an alternate is proposed, ABH publishes both a pivots cross reference chart and a substitution request form for pivots, which is how a proposed equal gets documented for the architect.
12) What finishes does the ABH 0370 pivot set come in to match the rest of my door hardware?
Fourteen finishes are offered on the 0370: Bright Brass, Satin Brass, Painted Brass, Bright Bronze, Satin Bronze, Painted Satin Bronze, Painted Dark Bronze, Oil Rubbed Bronze, Bright Chrome, Bright Stainless Steel, Satin Stainless Steel, Painted Aluminum, Black Suede Powder Coat, and White Suede Powder Coat. Satin Stainless Steel and Painted Aluminum are the usual matches for aluminum storefront and modern commercial openings; Oil Rubbed Bronze and the suede powder coats cover hospitality and architectural work. The pivot itself is stainless steel underneath regardless of finish.
13) Will the ABH 0370 hold up in a wet or corrosive environment like a pool deck or coastal entrance?
The 0370 pivot set is built on a stainless steel substrate, which gives it corrosion resistance for exposed and washdown-adjacent commercial locations. Paired with the heavy duty rating and a 500 lb door capacity, it suits exterior entrances, healthcare and industrial doors where the pivot sees moisture and constant traffic.
