ABUS 37/55-KD – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What size shackle opening does the ABUS 37/55 Granit padlock have, and will it fit a heavy hasp?
The 37/55 Granit gives you 1-5/64 inches of horizontal clearance and 1-3/64 inches of vertical clearance inside the shackle, on a 7/16 inch diameter shackle. That is a short, tight opening by design, so measure the staple or chain link you plan to lock through before ordering. ABUS builds the 130 hasp around this lock, and the description calls that pairing out directly, so if you are specifying from scratch the hasp is the matching part.
2) Can I get ABUS 37/55 padlocks keyed alike so one key opens all of them?
Keyed alike is one of three keying options on the 37/55 Granit, alongside keyed different and master keyed. Keyed alike is what you want for a crew that needs one key across a run of gates or containers. Master keyed suits a facility where the site manager carries a key that opens every lock but each tenant or department key only opens their own. Keyed different is the default when each lock is independent.
3) Can a locksmith copy ABUS 37/55 Granit keys, or is duplication controlled?
Key control depends on which card comes with the lock. With the security card (SZP), original ABUS Plus keys can only be cut by a licensed ABUS dealer and only when the card is presented, so nobody on site can quietly run a spare. With the code card, the number on the card is all a retailer needs to cut a key, which is convenient but gives you no restriction. If unauthorized duplication is the risk you are managing, specify the security card version.
4) Can the ABUS 37/55 be re-keyed to match ABUS Plus keys I already carry?
Yes, the 37/55 Granit cylinder can be re-keyed to work on an existing ABUS Plus key, which ABUS designates RK. That is the route if you already run ABUS Plus locks on a site and want new openings on the same key rather than starting a second key system. It is an ABUS Plus disc cylinder, so the existing key has to be an ABUS Plus key, not another ABUS platform.
5) What else could I use instead of an ABUS Granit 37/55 if I need the padlock on my building's existing key system?
The 37/55 runs an ABUS Plus disc cylinder, so it keys into ABUS Plus and not into a Schlage, Sargent or Medeco system. If your site is already standardized on one of those, look at a padlock built for that platform instead: the Sargent 60-858-2 is a removable core padlock with a 2 inch stainless shackle, the Sargent 758 is key retaining in US4 satin brass, and the Medeco 5260 is a 52 Series brass body lock with a 7/16 inch shackle and M3 key technology. Those let the padlock share the same keyway as the doors. The tradeoff is that you give up the hardened steel Granit body.
6) What is the closest equivalent to the ABUS 37/55 Granit padlock if the site standardizes on Medeco?
Within the Medeco padlock range, the 5260 is the nearest counterpart on shackle size: the Medeco 5260 is a 52 Series brass body padlock with a 7/16 inch shackle diameter and M3 key technology in satin chrome, matching the 7/16 inch shackle diameter of the ABUS 37/55. The differences are in body material and key system. The 37/55 uses a hardened special steel body and shackle with a black Granit corrosion coating and an ABUS Plus disc cylinder, and it ships with two keys, one with an LED light. The 5260 uses a brass body with Medeco M3 keying, so it will key into an existing Medeco M3 system where the ABUS will not.
7) Which padlock should be used instead of the ABUS 37/55 when the facility runs an interchangeable core keying program?
The Sargent 60-858-2 is a removable core padlock with a 2 inch stainless steel shackle, so it accepts the same core the rest of a Sargent keyed facility already uses and can be rekeyed by pulling the core. The ABUS 37/55 Granit takes a different approach: it uses an ABUS Plus disc cylinder that is rekeyed to match an existing ABUS Plus key rather than swapped as a core, and it can be ordered with a security card so original keys are only duplicated by presenting that card at a licensed ABUS dealer. Choose the Sargent where core interchange across a large keyway program is the requirement, and the 37/55 where a hardened steel Granit body built to EN 12320 is the requirement.
8) Is the Schlage KS23D a substitute for the ABUS 37/55 Granit padlock?
They are not interchangeable on the shackle. The Schlage KS23D/KS23F is a 20 Series brass padlock with a 5/16 inch diameter shackle, while the ABUS 37/55 Granit has a 7/16 inch shackle diameter with 1-5/64 inch horizontal and 1-3/64 inch vertical shackle clearance. A hasp or chain link drilled or sized for the 37/55 shackle will leave slack on the thinner Schlage shackle, and a hasp slot cut for the Schlage may not pass the 37/55 at all. The 37/55 is also a hardened special steel body with a black Granit corrosion coating, against a brass body on the Schlage. Confirm the hasp opening before treating one as a drop-in for the other.
9) How wide is the ABUS 37/55 Granit padlock body?
Body width on the 37/55 is 2-29/64 inches. That matters where the lock has to sit inside a hasp cover or a recessed container lock box, since the body is the part that has to clear, not the shackle. Check the pocket width before you commit on a container or truck door application.
10) Is the ABUS 37/55 Granit padlock good enough for outdoor gates and containers year-round?
Outdoor use is what the 37/55 Granit is built for. Body and shackle are hardened special steel with a black Granit coating added specifically for corrosion resistance, and ABUS lists warehouses, industrial sites, factory gates, containers and lorries as the intended applications. It is a commercial-duty lock, not a residential one.
11) What standard is the ABUS Granit 37/55 padlock made to?
The 37/55 Granit is manufactured to European standard EN 12320, the padlock and shackle standard, and ABUS states it meets the special requirements of insurance companies. For an institutional spec that calls out an attack-resistance standard rather than an ANSI grade, EN 12320 is the reference to cite.
12) What makes a Granit padlock harder to pull off than a standard padlock?
Two things on the 37/55. The shackle is retained by a double ball locking mechanism, which is what resists a pulling or prying attack on the shackle legs, and both the body and shackle are hardened special steel rather than brass or laminated plate. That combination is aimed at forced attack, which is a different problem than pick resistance; the ABUS Plus disc cylinder covers the manipulation side.
13) Is there a padlock with a thinner shackle than the ABUS 37/55 for a hasp with a small staple?
The 37/55 shackle is 7/16 inch, which will not pass through a staple or chain sized for a lighter lock. For a smaller opening, the Schlage KS23D/KS23F brass padlock and the Medeco 54515G XT electronic padlock both use a 5/16 inch shackle. The Medeco 5260 is the same 7/16 inch shackle diameter as the 37/55, so it is a size match rather than a step down.
14) Does the key stay in the ABUS 37/55 when the padlock is open, or do I need a key retaining padlock?
Key retention is worth settling before you order, because it changes how the lock behaves on a loading dock. Among padlocks ZenSupply carries, the Sargent 758 is key retaining, meaning the key cannot be withdrawn while the lock is open so nobody walks off with it. The Sargent 858, the Sargent 82-856 KESO, and the Medeco 54515G XT are non-key retaining, which lets a driver pocket the key while the container is open. Pick based on whether you would rather lose the key or lose the lock.
15) I need an audit trail of who opened the lock and when. Will the ABUS Granit 37/55 do that?
No. The 37/55 Granit is a purely mechanical padlock with an ABUS Plus disc cylinder, so there is no access record. For access logging on an outdoor opening, the Medeco 54515G XT is an electronic indoor/outdoor padlock from the System Series and is the product class to look at instead.
16) What is the difference between a key retaining and a non-key retaining padlock when choosing against the ABUS 37/55?
Key retaining means the key cannot be withdrawn while the lock is open, so the padlock cannot be left hanging unlocked with the key in a pocket. The Sargent 758 is a key retaining standard padlock in a US4 satin brass finish; the Sargent 858 is the non-key retaining version with a stainless steel shackle in the same US4 satin brass. For gates, containers and trucks that are opened and closed through a shift, key retaining enforces relocking, which is why it is common on institutional and fleet programs. The ABUS 37/55 Granit is supplied with two keys, one with an LED light, and is built for warehouses, industrial sites, factory gates, containers and lorries where a hardened steel body and EN 12320 construction is the deciding factor.
17) Can the ABUS 37/55 Granit be ordered keyed alike or master keyed to match other padlocks on a property?
The ABUS 37/55 Granit is available keyed alike, keyed different, and master keyed, so a set can be brought up on one key for a route or folded into a master keyed program. Keying is within the ABUS Plus system, and the cylinder can be rekeyed to match an existing ABUS Plus key. Where the property is already standardized on another system, keying has to follow that system instead: the Sargent 82-856 is a non-key retaining padlock with a 2 inch by 2 inch brass case and stainless steel shackle in the KESO Series, and the Sargent 60-858-2 is a removable core padlock with a 2 inch stainless steel shackle, each keyed into its own program rather than into ABUS Plus.
18) Will a brass body padlock fit the same hasp as the ABUS 37/55?
Body width and shackle clearance decide it, not the metal. The ABUS 37/55 Granit measures 2-29/64 inch in body width with 1-5/64 inch horizontal and 1-3/64 inch vertical shackle clearance. The Sargent 82-856 is a non-key retaining padlock with a 2 inch by 2 inch brass case and a stainless steel shackle, so it presents a narrower body across the hasp staple. On a hasp with a recessed or shrouded staple pocket, the wider 37/55 body may need the pocket checked, while the narrower brass case will drop in with room to spare. Measure the staple opening and the pocket width before committing either way.
19) Which padlock meets insurance requirements for high theft risk sites?
The ABUS 37/55 Granit is the one built to that brief: it is manufactured to European standard EN 12320, meets the special requirements of insurance companies, and is described as a certified and approved padlock for securing goods at very high risk of theft, with a double ball locking mechanism for extreme pulling resistance and hardened special steel body and shackle. It is a commercial grade lock for warehouses, industrial sites, factory gates, containers and lorries, and pairs with the ABUS high security hasp No. 130. Among the alternatives, the Sargent and Medeco padlocks are keyed to their own systems and are selected on key system fit rather than on EN 12320 certification.
20) How many keys come with the ABUS Granit 37/55 padlock?
Two keys ship with the 37/55, and one of them has an LED light built into the head for working a gate or container latch after dark. Plus a card, either code or security depending on which version you order.
21) Does the ABUS 37/55 Granit come ready to use, or does a cylinder have to be ordered separately?
The ABUS 37/55 Granit is supplied complete with an ABUS Plus disc cylinder and two keys, one of which has an LED light, so it arrives ready to hang. That is worth confirming against some high security padlocks that are sold as a body only: the Medeco 521 G8R is a weather-tight padlock supplied less pop-out cylinder with a solid stainless steel body, which means the cylinder is a separate line on the order. For a purchasing agent building a quantity order for gates or containers, the difference is one line item versus two.
