TRUST THE PROFESSIONALS

Our Granit™ 37/60 padlock is the lock for the highest security requirements, made in Germany.

The Granit 37/60 padlock is one of our high security locks. For protection of highly valuable objects at a high risk of theft, rely on our Granit 37/60! Halls, doors, gates, containers, or trucks can be reliably locked with this padlock. The lock has a special coating for improved corrosion protection. Lock body and shackle are made of hardened special steel, with an ABUS Plus disc cylinder inside. One of the two keys supplied is equipped with LED lighting. You can purchase this padlock with either a code card or security card. With the code card, the number on the card is all you need to make keys at a retailer. With the security card, you keep control: Original keys can only be duplicated by presenting the enclosed security card at a licensed ABUS dealer. Tip: In combination with the Hasp 130, the protection is even more reliable.

ABUS 37/60-KD – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will an ABUS 37/60 Granit padlock fit through the slots on my hasp or container hardware?
Check two numbers against your hasp. The 37/60 Granit uses a 7/16 inch diameter shackle, and the opening it gives you is 45/64 inch horizontal clearance by 5/8 inch vertical clearance. The lock body itself is 2-9/16 inches wide, so the staple or slot has to clear a body that size sitting against it. On tight container hasps or narrow gate eyes, the body width is usually the thing that stops you, not the shackle. ABUS pairs this lock with their Hasp 130, which is cut for it.
2) Can I get ABUS 37/60 padlocks keyed alike across a whole site?
Yes. The 37/60 Granit is ordered three ways on keying: keyed alike, so one key runs every lock in the batch; keyed different, so each lock has its own key; or master keyed, where each lock keeps its own change key and a master opens them all. Keyed alike is what most yards and container fleets want. Master keyed is the pick when a site supervisor needs blanket access but crews should only open their own gates.
3) How do I stop staff from copying keys to an ABUS Granit 37/60?
Key control on the 37/60 runs off the card that ships with it, and the two card types behave very differently. With the security card (SZP), original keys can only be cut by a licensed ABUS dealer when someone presents that card, so possession of the card is possession of key control. With the code card, anyone holding the card number can have keys made at a retailer, which is convenient and is not key control. If unauthorized duplication is the thing you're guarding against, specify the security card version and lock the card in the office, not in the truck.
4) ABUS Granit 37/60 vs a Medeco or Sargent padlock, which one do I want?
They solve different problems. The Granit 37/60 is a hardened steel high-security lock with an ABUS Plus disc cylinder, keyed within the ABUS system, so it stands alone well on gates, containers and trucks. If your building already runs a keying system and you want the padlocks on the same keys as the doors, go to a lock that takes your cylinder instead: the Sargent 60-858-2 is a removable core padlock with a 2 inch stainless shackle, and the Medeco 5260 is a brass body lock on M3 key technology with the same 7/16 inch shackle diameter as the Granit. For an access-controlled opening with an audit trail, the Medeco 54515G is an electronic indoor/outdoor padlock.
5) Can I put my own interchangeable core or existing house key cylinder in an ABUS Granit 37/60?
No. The 37/60 comes with the ABUS Plus disc cylinder built in, and the lock is keyed through ABUS ordering options, not by swapping in a core from your existing system. If standardizing the padlocks onto the keyway you already use is the requirement, the lock to look at is a removable core padlock such as the Sargent 60-858-2, which is built to take a core rather than a fixed factory cylinder.
6) What is the closest equivalent to the ABUS 37/60 Granit padlock if I need a 7/16 inch shackle in a brass body?
The Medeco 5260 is a 52 Series brass body padlock with a 7/16 inch shackle diameter, the same shackle diameter as the ABUS 37/60 Granit. The 5260 uses M3 key technology and comes in satin chrome. The ABUS 37/60 differs in construction: body and shackle are hardened alloy steel with a black Granit corrosion-resistant coating, and the cylinder is an ABUS Plus disc cylinder inserted from the top for drill and pull resistance. Choose by cylinder platform and body material: brass body with M3 keying on the Medeco 5260, hardened steel with ABUS Plus on the 37/60.
7) I run a facility on Sargent small format interchangeable cores. Which padlock lets me keep that keyway instead of the ABUS 37/60?
The Sargent 60-858-2 is a removable core padlock with a 2 inch stainless steel shackle, from the 758/858 Series, so it takes a core out of your existing Sargent system. The ABUS 37/60 Granit uses an ABUS Plus disc cylinder, a separate key platform that will not accept a Sargent core; it is ordered instead as keyed alike, keyed different, or master keyed within ABUS keying. If standardizing every padlock on one facility core is the requirement, the removable core Sargent is the fit; if the driver is the hardened steel body and shackle guard on a high-theft-risk opening, the 37/60 is.
8) For a washdown or coastal opening, is the ABUS 37/60 Granit the right padlock or is there a stainless option?
The Medeco 521 G8R is a weather-tight padlock with a solid stainless steel body, supplied less pop-out cylinder, from the G8R series, so the corrosion resistance comes from the base metal and you order the cylinder separately. The ABUS 37/60 Granit takes a different route: hardened alloy steel body and shackle with a special black Granit coating for improved corrosion protection, and it arrives complete with its ABUS Plus disc cylinder and two keys. Solid stainless with a separate cylinder on the Medeco 521 G8R, coated hardened steel as a complete lock on the 37/60.
9) I need a padlock that clears a thick hasp staple. How does the ABUS 37/60 Granit compare on shackle opening?
The ABUS 37/60 Granit has 45/64 inch horizontal shackle clearance and 5/8 inch vertical shackle clearance, on a 2-9/16 inch wide body with a 7/16 inch shackle. That is a deliberately tight opening paired with a shackle guard, which limits tool access but also limits what the lock will fit over. Where you need a taller reach through the staple, the Sargent 60-858-2 carries a 2 inch stainless steel shackle and the Sargent 82-856 has a 2 inch by 2 inch brass case with a stainless steel shackle. Measure the staple and the shackle window before ordering, and note that ABUS pairs the 37/60 with the high-security hasp No. 130.
10) Is the ABUS 37/60 Granit padlock OK to leave outdoors on a gate or container year round?
That's what it's built for. The body and shackle are hardened alloy steel, and the black Granit coating is a corrosion-protection coating over that steel, which is why it goes on factory gates, yard gates, containers and trailers. Steel with a protective coating is a different corrosion story than a solid brass or stainless body, so in salt spray or coastal exposure some buyers go to a stainless-body lock instead, like the Medeco 521 G8R weather-tight padlock with its solid stainless steel body.
11) What makes the ABUS Granit 37/60 harder to attack than an ordinary padlock?
Four things, and they target four different attacks. A double ball locking mechanism holds the shackle at both legs, which is what resists a pulling or spreading attack. The shackle guard shields the exposed shackle from tools. The cylinder is inserted from the top of the body rather than the face, which is what gives it drill and pull resistance at the cylinder. And the ABUS Plus disc cylinder resists manipulation, so picking is a different problem than with a standard pin tumbler. It's sold for high-theft-risk property and meets special requirements of insurance companies.
12) Is the ABUS Granit 37/60 too much lock for a storage unit or tool cage?
For a low-risk interior opening it usually is. The 37/60 is a commercial-duty high-security lock aimed at high-value goods at serious theft risk, with a 2-9/16 inch body that needs a hasp built to take it. Light-duty interior cages, lockers and cabinets are better served by a smaller brass-body lock such as the Schlage KS23D/KS23F with its 5/16 inch shackle, which threads through hardware the Granit will not fit.
13) Will the ABUS 37/60 Granit shackle fit a standard 1/2 inch hasp staple hole?
Yes, with room. The shackle is 7/16 inch in diameter, so it passes any staple or eye drilled to 1/2 inch or larger. Where it goes wrong is the other direction: the clearance inside the shackle is 45/64 inch horizontally and 5/8 inch vertically, so a thick hasp bar plus a heavy staple can add up past that and the shackle won't close. Measure the stack the shackle has to swallow, not just the hole.
14) What is a simpler padlock than the ABUS 37/60 Granit for a low-risk interior gate or cabinet?
The Schlage KS23D/KS23F is a brass padlock with a 5/16 inch diameter shackle, a lighter shackle than the 7/16 inch on the ABUS 37/60 Granit. The Sargent 758 is a key retaining standard padlock in US4 satin brass, which holds the key captive while the lock is open. The ABUS 37/60 is built around hardened alloy steel, a double ball locking mechanism for pulling resistance, and a shackle guard, features aimed at warehouses, factory gates, containers and trucks rather than interior cabinet duty.
15) Does the ABUS 37/60 Granit padlock retain the key when unlocked, or do I need a non-key-retaining model?
The ABUS 37/60 Granit ships with two keys, one with an LED light, and its shackle can be taken out of the body. If your crew needs a lock the key pulls free from while it hangs open, the Sargent 858 is a non-key retaining padlock with a stainless steel shackle in US4 satin brass, and the Sargent 82-856 is a non-key retaining padlock with a 2 inch by 2 inch brass case and stainless steel shackle. The Medeco 54515G is also non-key retaining, with a 5/16 inch shackle diameter. Key retention is a crew-habit decision: retaining keeps the key from walking off with the lock open, non-retaining lets one key move down a row of openings.
16) Which padlock should I standardize on across a facility if key duplication control is the main concern?
The ABUS 37/60 Granit is offered with a security card, so original keys can only be duplicated by presenting that card at a licensed ABUS dealer, or with a code card, where the number on the card is all that is needed to have keys made. It is ordered keyed alike, keyed different, or master keyed. Among the alternatives, the Sargent 82-856 is a KESO Series padlock and the Medeco 5260 uses M3 key technology, each tying the padlock to that manufacturer's own key platform. Standardizing means picking one platform and buying every padlock into it, since the cylinders are not interchangeable across brands.
17) Does the ABUS 37/60 padlock trap the key when it's unlocked, and how many keys come with it?
Two keys ship with the Granit 37/60, and one of them has an LED light in the head, which matters more than it sounds on a night gate or an unlit container yard. The shackle on this lock can also be taken out of the body, which is useful for hasps you'd rather thread the shackle through than swing a whole lock into. If a non-key-retaining lock is specifically what your spec calls out, the Sargent 858 and the Sargent 82-856 are both listed as non-key-retaining padlocks with stainless steel shackles.
