ABUS 37RK/60-KD – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will an ABUS 37RK/60 Granit padlock fit through my hasp or container lock rings?
Check the opening in your hasp against two numbers: the shackle is 7/16 inch in diameter, and the clear space it leaves is 45/64 inch horizontally by 5/8 inch vertically. The lock body is 2-9/16 inch wide, so the hasp staple has to be reachable without the body fouling the door frame or container edge. On container doors and factory gates that usually means pairing it with a purpose built shackle guard hasp, and ABUS calls out their No. 135 hasp for this padlock.
2) I need one key to open padlocks on every gate on the site. Can I order the ABUS 37RK/60 that way?
Yes. The 37RK/60 is sold two ways: KA (keyed alike), where every lock in the group opens on the same key, and KD (keyed different), where each lock has its own key. For a crew running a route of gates or containers, keyed alike is what you want. Order keyed different when each padlock belongs to a separate tenant, unit, or department and you do not want one key opening all of them. Pick the keying at order time, it is not something you change later on this lock.
3) Can I rekey the ABUS 37RK/60 to my building's existing key system?
No. The 37RK/60 is a fixed cylinder padlock sold keyed alike or keyed different, with the keys ABUS supplies. If you run a facility keyway and need padlocks on the same system as your door cylinders, look at an interchangeable core padlock instead: ZenSupply carries the Sargent 60-858-2 removable core padlock, which takes your own core so it keys into the system you already have.
4) What is a straight equivalent to the ABUS 37RK/60 padlock with the same 7/16 inch shackle diameter?
The Medeco 5260 is the closest match on shackle size: it is a 52 Series brass body padlock with a 7/16 inch shackle diameter and M3 key technology in a satin chrome finish, the same 7/16 inch shackle diameter the 37RK/60 carries. The difference is in body material and keying platform. The 37RK/60 uses a hardened body and shackle with a Black Granit coating for corrosion resistance and a shackle that can be taken out, while the 5260 uses a brass body with Medeco M3. Choose on which key system the site already runs.
5) I need padlocks on the same small format interchangeable core system as the rest of the building - is the ABUS 37RK/60 the right choice?
The 37RK/60 is a keyed padlock supplied keyed alike or keyed different, so it is keyed on its own ABUS system rather than accepting a core pulled from the building's other hardware. For a facility standardizing on removable cores, the Sargent 60-858-2 is a removable core padlock with a 2 inch stainless steel shackle in the 758/858 Series, which lets the padlock take the same core family as the rest of the Sargent hardware. Use the 37RK/60 where the padlocks can stand as their own key group - gates, containers, warehouse doors - and the removable core lock where the padlock has to fall under the master key system.
6) Is the ABUS 37RK Granit padlock any good outdoors, or will it rust up on a yard gate?
Outdoor use is the point of it. The body and shackle are specially hardened and finished in the new Black Granit coating, which ABUS added specifically for more corrosion resistance over the plain Granit. That is why it shows up on warehouse doors, factory gates, containers and lorries, all of which sit in weather year round.
7) What else could I buy instead of the ABUS 37RK/60 Granit padlock?
Depends on what you are solving for. The Medeco 5260, from the 52 Series, is the closest on shackle size at 7/16 inch diameter, in a brass body with M3 key technology and a satin chrome finish, so it suits interior and controlled key work rather than a hardened outdoor gate. The Medeco 521 G8R is a weather tight padlock with a solid stainless steel body if corrosion is the driver. For lighter duty openings, the Schlage KS23D/KS23F and the Medeco 54515G XT both use a 5/16 inch shackle, thinner than the 7/16 inch on the 37RK/60, so check your hasp before switching either way. The 54515G is an electronic padlock rather than mechanical.
8) Is the ABUS 37RK/60 a commercial grade padlock or a consumer one?
Commercial. The 37RK/60 Granit is built for goods at high theft risk, and ABUS states it is recommended by police and insurance companies and meets special requirements of insurance companies. That is the line that matters if your carrier specifies lock standards for stored stock or vehicles.
9) What is the difference between a key retaining and non-key retaining padlock, and which is the ABUS 37RK/60?
Key retaining means the key cannot be withdrawn while the lock is open, so the padlock cannot be left hanging unlocked with the key in a pocket. The Sargent 758 is a key retaining standard padlock in a US4 satin brass finish, while the Sargent 858 is non-key retaining with a stainless steel shackle in the same US4 satin brass, and the Sargent 82-856 is non-key retaining with a 2 inch by 2 inch brass case and stainless steel shackle. The ABUS 37RK/60 is a Granit padlock whose shackle can be taken out, intended for warehouses, factory gates, containers and lorries where the lock is removed from the hasp during loading. Pick key retaining where a lock left open is the failure you are guarding against, and the 37RK/60 where attack resistance at the gate is.
10) For an outdoor gate exposed to weather, does the ABUS 37RK/60 hold up or is there a better body material?
The 37RK/60 is a commercial padlock with a specially hardened lock body and shackle and a Black Granit coating for added corrosion resistance. Where the concern is corrosion above all else, the Medeco 521 G8R is a weather-tight padlock with a solid stainless steel body, supplied less pop-out cylinder, and the Medeco 54515G is an XT electronic indoor/outdoor padlock. The 37RK/60 answers a different priority - it is a certified and approved padlock built for goods at very high risk of theft and recommended by police and insurance companies, so the hardened body is doing security work as well as weather work.
11) Can I swap an ABUS 37RK/60 for a Medeco 54515G on the same hasp?
Not as a like for like. The 54515G is an XT electronic padlock, non-key retaining, with a 5/16 inch shackle diameter, so it is a credential-based lock on an electronic platform rather than a mechanical key. The 37RK/60 is a keyed mechanical Granit padlock with a 7/16 inch shackle and a 2-9/16 inch body, ordered keyed alike or keyed different. The hasp will accept the thinner 5/16 inch shackle, but the audit trail and programming of an electronic lock are a different operating model from a keyed padlock, and the heavier shackle section is lost.
12) Is a brass body padlock a substitute for the ABUS 37RK/60 on a high risk container?
Brass body locks in the comparable range include the Medeco 5260, a 52 Series brass body padlock with a 7/16 inch shackle, the Sargent 758 in US4 satin brass, and the Sargent 82-856 with a 2 inch by 2 inch brass case and stainless steel shackle. The 37RK/60 is built differently for the container application: a specially hardened lock body and shackle with the Black Granit coating, certified and approved, and intended to secure warehouses, factory gates, containers and lorries, with ABUS hasp No. 135 as the matching mount. If the opening is a container or gate at very high theft risk, the hardened body is the reason to specify the 37RK/60 rather than a brass case.
13) The shackle needs to come off so the lock stays with the gate. Does this one do that?
It does. The shackle on the 37RK/60 can be taken out of the body, which lets you thread it through a fixed ring or leave the body captive on a hasp rather than carrying the whole lock loose. Useful on container doors and gate chains where a dropped padlock ends up in the gravel.
14) What is the difference between the Sargent 758 and 858 padlocks when I am cross shopping against the ABUS 37RK/60?
The Sargent 758 is a key retaining standard padlock with a US4 satin brass finish. The Sargent 858 is non-key retaining, with a stainless steel shackle and the same US4 satin brass finish, and the 60-858-2 adds a removable core with a 2 inch stainless steel shackle in the 758/858 Series. Against the 37RK/60, the Sargent range gives you the key retention and core choices; the 37RK/60 gives a 7/16 inch shackle in a 2-9/16 inch hardened Granit body with the shackle able to be taken out, in keyed alike or keyed different.
