ABUS 37RK/55HB50-KD – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can I get ABUS Granit 37/55 padlocks all keyed to the same key for a site?
Yes. The 37RK/55HB50 is ordered keyed alike, keyed different, or master keyed. Keyed alike puts every padlock on one key, which is what most warehouse and gate fleets want. Master keyed gives each lock its own key plus a single key that opens the whole group, the usual choice when a supervisor needs access to everything but crews only get their own openings. Keyed different means each lock is independent.
2) Is the ABUS Granit 37/55 padlock rated to any standard for insurance purposes?
The Granit 37/55 is made to European standard EN 12320 and ABUS states it meets the special requirements of insurance companies. That is the point of the lock: it is aimed at high value goods at high theft risk, warehouses, industrial sites, factory gates, containers and trucks, where a carrier or underwriter asks what the lock is rated to.
3) Can someone copy the keys to my ABUS Granit padlock without my say-so?
Key control is an ordering decision on the Granit 37/55. With the security card version, original keys are only cut by a licensed ABUS dealer when the enclosed security card is presented, so nobody duplicates a key off the ring. With the code card version, anyone holding the card number can have keys made at a retailer, which is convenient but is not key control. For a multi-family or institutional site where terminated staff are a real risk, the security card is the version you want.
4) How is the ABUS Granit 37/55 different from a Sargent or Medeco padlock that takes my existing cylinder?
The Granit 37/55 is a closed key system: it runs an ABUS Plus disc cylinder and keys into ABUS, not into your building's keyway. If your facility is standardized on a small format interchangeable core, a padlock like the Sargent 60-858-2 removable core padlock lets you drop your own core in and keep one key across doors and padlocks. Medeco's 5260 in the 52 Series uses M3 key technology and a brass body with a 7/16 inch shackle. Pick the ABUS when the priority is attack resistance on a gate or container; pick a removable core padlock when the priority is staying on the site's existing key system.
5) What is a stainless steel alternative to the ABUS 37RK/55HB50 Granit padlock for outdoor gates?
The Medeco 521 G8R weather-tight padlock has a solid stainless steel body and is supplied less pop-out cylinder, so the cylinder is specified separately. The ABUS 37RK/55HB50 uses a hardened special steel body and shackle with a black Granit coating for corrosion protection and ships with an ABUS Plus disc cylinder already installed and two keys. Choose the Medeco 521 if the site standardizes on its own cylinder; choose the 37RK/55HB50 if a complete keyed lock out of the box suits the opening.
6) What should I use instead of the ABUS 37RK/55HB50 if our facility keys everything on interchangeable cores?
The Sargent 60-858-2 is a removable core padlock with a 2 inch stainless steel shackle, so the core drops into the same keying system as the rest of the Sargent hardware in the building. The ABUS 37RK/55HB50 is keyed on an ABUS Plus disc cylinder, and the RK designation means the cylinder can be re-keyed to an existing ABUS Plus key rather than swapped as a core. Pick the Sargent if core interchange is the standard; pick the ABUS if the site is already on ABUS Plus keys.
7) What does the RK in ABUS 37RK/55HB50 actually mean when I order?
RK means the cylinder can be re-keyed to work on an existing ABUS Plus key. If you already run ABUS Plus cylinders on a site, the RK version folds new padlocks into that key system instead of adding another key to the ring. It ships with two keys, one of which has an LED light in it for dark yards and container doors.
8) Will an ABUS Granit padlock hold up outdoors on a gate or container year round?
Body and shackle are hardened special steel with a black Granit coating specifically for corrosion protection, and ABUS sells it for factory gates, containers and lorries, all exterior duty. It is a commercial grade lock, not a residential one.
9) What stops someone from cutting or pulling an ABUS Granit 37/55 off a hasp?
Two things do the work. The shackle is retained by a double ball locking mechanism, which is what resists a pulling or prying attack rather than a cut. And the shackle itself is hardened special steel at 11 mm diameter. Inside is an ABUS Plus disc cylinder, which is the picking and manipulation side of the equation rather than the brute force side.
10) I need a padlock heavier than a standard brass one for a truck or container. What are my options?
The Granit 37/55 sits at the heavy end: hardened steel body and shackle, 11 mm shackle, built to EN 12320. Brass body padlocks like the Schlage KS23D/KS23F and the Medeco 5260 are lighter duty by construction, and the Schlage runs a 5/16 inch shackle against the Granit's 11 mm, so it passes through smaller staples but gives up cross section. For stainless in a wet or coastal setting, the Medeco 521 G8R is a solid stainless steel body weather-tight padlock. Match the shackle diameter to the hasp before you decide.
11) Can I get an audit trail or access schedule on a padlock instead of a mechanical key?
Not from the Granit 37/55, which is a mechanical padlock on an ABUS Plus disc cylinder. If you need electronic credentials on an outdoor padlock, the Medeco 54515G XT is an electronic indoor/outdoor padlock in the System Series, non-key retaining, with a 5/16 inch shackle. Note that smaller shackle: check it clears the hasp you are already using before you switch.
12) Is a brass body padlock a substitute for the ABUS 37RK/55HB50 Granit?
Not on the same terms. The Medeco 5260 has a brass body in satin chrome and the Sargent 82-856 has a 2 inch by 2 inch brass case; brass resists corrosion by its own material. The ABUS 37RK/55HB50 gets its corrosion protection from a black Granit coating over a hardened special steel body and shackle, which is the construction ABUS builds to EN 12320 for high theft risk applications. A brass body lock is a different construction, not a drop-in equal, even where the shackle diameter matches.
13) Is there a key retaining padlock comparable to the ABUS 37RK/55HB50?
The Sargent 758 is a key retaining standard padlock in a US4 satin brass finish, meaning the key cannot be withdrawn while the shackle is open. Its non-key-retaining counterpart is the Sargent 858, which has a stainless steel shackle and the same US4 satin brass finish. Key retention matters where a padlock is left hanging open on a gate during the work day and the key must stay with the lock.
14) What is the difference between the ABUS 37RK/55HB50 and an electronic padlock like the Medeco 54515G?
The Medeco 54515G XT is an electronic indoor/outdoor padlock, non-key retaining, with a 5/16 inch shackle diameter and cylinder included, and it is audited and controlled through its electronic credential rather than a cut key. The ABUS 37RK/55HB50 is fully mechanical: an ABUS Plus disc cylinder with two supplied keys, one of them fitted with an LED light, and no battery or programming to maintain. Sites that need an access record on remote gates lean electronic; sites that need a lock that works with no power lean mechanical.
15) Which padlock should I standardize on across a property if I want one key for many locks?
The ABUS 37RK/55HB50 is ordered keyed alike, keyed different, or master keyed, so a set can share one key or roll up under a master. Among the alternatives, the Sargent 60-858-2 uses a removable core, which lets a facility bring padlocks into an existing Sargent master key system by swapping cores instead of ordering keying up front. Decide by whether the property already runs a core-based system or is starting fresh.
