ABUS 37RK/70-KD – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the ABUS 37RK/70 Granit padlock fit my hasp opening?
The 37RK/70 gives you 1-9/64 inches of horizontal shackle clearance and 1-3/8 inches vertical, with a 35/64 inch shackle diameter and a body 3-1/32 inches wide. Measure the eye on your hasp or container lock bar first: the opening has to pass a 35/64 inch shackle, and the staple has to sit inside that 1-9/64 x 1-3/8 inch window. Heavy container hasps and gate chain links often will not take a shackle this thick, so check the eye, not just the gap.
2) What does the RK in ABUS 37RK/70 mean, and can it be keyed to my existing ABUS keys?
RK means the cylinder can be re-keyed to match an existing ABUS Plus key, so if a site already runs ABUS Plus disc cylinders the 37RK/70 can be brought onto that key rather than adding another one to the ring. It ships as keyed alike, keyed different, or master keyed, so you pick the arrangement when you order.
3) Which keying should I order for a padlock going on a fleet of gates and containers?
Three keying arrangements are offered on the 37RK/70. Keyed alike puts every lock on one key, which is what most property managers and yard operations want when the same crew opens every gate. Keyed different gives each lock its own key, for storage cages or tenant use where access has to stay separate. Master keyed lets each lock keep its own key while a single master opens them all, which is the usual choice for a facility with contractors who need only their own opening plus a supervisor who needs all of them.
4) How well does the ABUS 37RK/70 resist being pulled or pried off?
It uses a double ball locking mechanism for pulling resistance, and the cylinder is inserted from the top for drill and pull resistance. The lock is built to the European standard EN 12320 and meets the special requirements of insurance companies, which is the reason it gets specified on high-value goods rather than general storage.
5) Can somebody get copies of my ABUS Granit keys cut without me knowing?
Not with the security card version. Original keys for the 37RK/70 can only be duplicated by presenting the enclosed security card at a licensed ABUS dealer, so key control stays with whoever holds the card. There is also a code card option, where the number on the card is all anyone needs to have keys made at a retailer, which is convenient but is the opposite of key control. Pick the security card if a lost key must not become an open gate.
6) Is the Granit 37RK/70 shackle too thick for my application, and what is a thinner alternative?
At 35/64 inch the Granit shackle is thick, and that is the point, but it will not pass a lot of standard hasps, chain links, or cabinet staples. Where you need something slimmer, the Schlage KS23D/KS23F brass padlock and the Medeco 54515G XT electronic padlock both use a 5/16 inch shackle, and the Medeco 5260 uses 7/16 inch. Measure the eye you have to pass before deciding.
7) What is the closest equivalent to the ABUS 37RK/70 Granit padlock if the site standardizes on a small-format interchangeable core?
The 37RK/70 uses an ABUS Plus disc cylinder that can be re-keyed to an existing ABUS Plus key, so it stays inside the ABUS key system rather than accepting a core from another platform. When the requirement is a core that pulls and swaps with the rest of the facility, the Sargent 60-858-2 is a removable core padlock with a 2 inch stainless steel shackle, which puts the lock on the same core program as the doors. The 37RK/70 answers a different requirement: a hardened special steel body and shackle with a double ball locking mechanism, built to EN 12320 for containers, gates and trucks.
8) The 37RK/70 shackle is too thick for the hasp on my gate. What padlock takes its place with a thinner shackle?
The ABUS 37RK/70 has a 35/64 inch shackle diameter and a 3-1/32 inch body width, with 1-9/64 inch horizontal and 1-3/8 inch vertical shackle clearance, so a hasp eye sized for a common utility padlock will not pass it. For a narrower shackle, the Schlage KS23D/KS23F is a brass padlock with a 5/16 inch diameter shackle, and the Medeco 54515G XT is an indoor/outdoor padlock also at 5/16 inch shackle diameter. The Medeco 5260 sits between them at a 7/16 inch shackle diameter in a brass body.
9) My spec calls for a key retaining padlock. Does the ABUS 37RK/70 meet it, and what does if not?
The ABUS 37RK/70 ships with two keys, one of them fitted with an LED light, and is ordered keyed alike, keyed different or master keyed. For an opening where the spec requires the key to stay captive in the lock while the shackle is open, the Sargent 758 is a key retaining standard padlock in a US4 satin brass finish. On the non-key-retaining side, the Sargent 858 has a stainless steel shackle in US4 satin brass, and the Sargent 82-856 is a non-key retaining padlock with a 2 inch by 2 inch brass case and stainless steel shackle.
10) Is the Medeco 54515G XT a substitute for the ABUS 37RK/70?
They are not interchangeable in the way the name similarity suggests. The Medeco 54515G is an XT electronic indoor/outdoor padlock, non-key retaining, with a 5/16 inch shackle diameter, so it belongs to an audited electronic access program with its own credentials and software. The ABUS 37RK/70 is a mechanical padlock with an ABUS Plus disc cylinder, two supplied keys and a 35/64 inch shackle diameter, and it can be ordered with a security card so original keys are only duplicated by presenting that card at a licensed ABUS dealer. Choose between them on whether the site wants access records or a purely mechanical key hierarchy.
11) I am master keying a whole yard. How does the ABUS 37RK/70 compare with the Sargent padlocks for keying across a facility?
The 37RK/70 is ordered keyed alike, keyed different or master keyed, and the RK cylinder can be re-keyed to match an existing ABUS Plus key, so added padlocks fold into an ABUS Plus system already in place. The Sargent padlocks key into a Sargent program instead: the 60-858-2 takes a removable core with a 2 inch stainless steel shackle so cores rotate with the building, the 82-856 is a KESO Series padlock with a brass case, and the 758 and 858 are 758/858 Series bodies in US4 satin brass. Pick the family that matches the key system the yard already runs, since the cylinders do not cross between them.
12) Is the ABUS Granit 37RK/70 padlock OK outdoors on a gate or container year round?
Yes. Body and shackle are hardened special steel and the lock carries a black Granit coating specifically for improved corrosion protection, which is why it is put on halls, doors, gates, containers and trucks. It is a commercial-duty lock, not a residential shed padlock.
13) What comes in the box with the ABUS 37RK/70 padlock, and do I need a hasp too?
Two keys are supplied, one of them with an LED light in it, which matters more than it sounds on a night gate or an unlit yard. The padlock itself is all you get for hardware. If you are securing a door or gate rather than a container lock bar, you also need a hasp, and ABUS calls out the Hasp 130 as the pairing for this lock.
14) ABUS Granit 37RK/70 or a removable core padlock like the Sargent 60-858-2, which do I want?
Different jobs. The 37RK/70 runs an ABUS Plus disc cylinder that a dealer re-keys, and it is the choice when the priority is attack resistance on a high-theft-risk opening. The Sargent 60-858-2 is a removable core padlock with a 2 inch stainless steel shackle, so an in-house locksmith can pull the core and swap keying on site in seconds, which is what large institutions with an existing SFIC system usually need. If your facility is already standardized on a core system, the removable core lock keeps the padlocks on the same program as the doors. If the padlock is protecting the thing thieves actually come for, the Granit is the heavier lock.
15) What is a good padlock for a coastal or wash-down site instead of the ABUS Granit?
The Granit 37RK/70 handles weather with a hardened steel body under a black Granit corrosion coating, but the coating is what stands between the steel and the salt. Where the environment is genuinely corrosive, the Medeco 521 G8R is a weather-tight padlock with a solid stainless steel body, which does not depend on a coating staying intact. For a marine, pool, or chemical wash-down opening that is the more forgiving choice.
16) Which padlock should I use instead of the ABUS 37RK/70 on a coastal exterior gate?
The 37RK/70 is built for exterior exposure: hardened special steel body and shackle with a black Granit coating for improved corrosion protection, and the cylinder is inserted from the top for drill and pull resistance. Where the preference is a non-ferrous or stainless housing rather than a coated steel one, the Medeco 521 G8R is a weather-tight padlock with a solid stainless steel body, supplied less pop-out cylinder, and the Medeco 54515G XT is rated for indoor and outdoor use. The tradeoff is the locking hardware itself, not the environment rating.
17) What is a simpler padlock than the ABUS 37RK/70 for interior storage cages where insurance grade security is not required?
The 37RK/70 is built to the requirements of insurance companies for goods at very high risk of theft, with a hardened alloy steel body, double ball locking and a 3-1/32 inch body width. For interior cages, lockers and low-exposure storage, a brass body padlock covers the job: the Schlage KS23D/KS23F is a brass padlock with a 5/16 inch shackle, and the Medeco 5260 is a 52 Series brass body padlock in satin chrome with M3 key technology and a 7/16 inch shackle diameter.
18) Will a padlock with a 2 inch shackle clear the same hasp as the ABUS 37RK/70?
Not necessarily, because shackle length and shackle clearance are different measurements. The ABUS 37RK/70 gives 1-3/8 inch vertical shackle clearance and 1-9/64 inch horizontal clearance under a 35/64 inch diameter shackle. The Sargent 60-858-2 is described by its 2 inch stainless steel shackle, and the Sargent 82-856 by a 2 inch by 2 inch brass case, so measure the hasp eye and the stack of material the shackle has to pass before treating either as a drop-in. The 37RK/70 is also intended to pair with the Hasp 130.
19) Does the key stay in the ABUS Granit 37RK/70 when the lock is open?
The 37RK/70 data does not settle key retention either way, so go by the alternatives if that behavior is what you are buying on. The Sargent 758 is a key retaining padlock, meaning the key cannot be removed while the lock is open, which stops crews from walking off with a gate left unsecured. The Sargent 858 and the Sargent 82-856 are non-key retaining, as is the Medeco 54515G, so the key comes out whether the lock is closed or not.
