Padlock 54 TITALIUM™

Secure items at low risk of theft with our 54 TITALIUM™ padlock.

ROBUST, SOLID, LIGHTWEIGHT

Secure items at low risk of theft with our 54 TITALIUM™ padlock.

Bags, caskets, valuable boxes, lockers, or tool boxes can be secured very well against theft with our padlock 54 Titalium. The lock body is made of solid TITALIUM™ special aluminum, which makes it particularly lightweight yet still robust. The hardened steel shackle provides good basic security because it makes the lock more difficult to attack - for example, with a bolt cutter or crowbar.

Technology:

  • Solid lock body made from TITALIUM™ aluminium alloy - higher security, less weight
  • Hardened steel shackle
  • Double bolted

Operation and use:

  • To secure valuables/goods of lesser value or at a low risk of theft
  • To secure bags, suitcases, jewel cases, cash boxes, lockers, tool boxes, etc.

ABUS 54TI/40 C – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Is a 40mm ABUS Titalium padlock big enough to secure a storage gate or exterior chain?
No, and this is the wrong tool for that job. The 54 TITALIUM is built for items at low risk of theft: bags, cases, jewel and cash boxes, lockers, tool boxes. The body measures 1-1/2 inch wide with a 15/64 inch shackle, which a determined attacker with the right tool will defeat. For a gate, yard, or exterior chain, move to a heavy stainless or brass body lock with a much thicker shackle, such as the Sargent 60-858-2 with its 2 inch stainless shackle or the Medeco 521 G8R solid stainless steel weather-tight padlock.
2) Can I key a batch of ABUS 54TI/40 padlocks alike for my building's lockers?
Not as ordered. The 54TI/40 C ships keyed different, meaning every lock comes on its own key. That's fine when each tenant or employee holds one lock, but if you want one key to open a whole bank of lockers you need a keyed-alike or master keyed program instead. For facilities that want padlocks on the same key system as the doors, a removable or interchangeable core padlock is the right route, such as the Sargent 60-858-2 removable core padlock.
3) What padlock should I use instead of the ABUS 54TI/40 if the lock has to live outdoors?
The 54TI/40 is a TITALIUM aluminum alloy body padlock intended for lower-risk items such as bags, cash boxes, lockers and tool boxes. For an opening exposed to weather, the Medeco 521 G8R is a weather-tight padlock with a solid stainless steel body, and the Medeco 54515G XT is an electronic padlock rated for indoor/outdoor use. Both are built around the exposure problem the 54TI/40 is not sold for.
4) I need a padlock that takes our facility's removable core - is the ABUS 54TI/40 keyed to that?
No. The 54TI/40 ships keyed different, so each lock has its own key and it is not built to accept a facility core. For a keying system, the Sargent 60-858-2 is a removable core padlock with a 2 inch stainless steel shackle, and the Sargent 82-856 uses KESO series key technology in a 2 inch by 2 inch brass case. The Medeco 5260 uses M3 key technology in a 52 Series brass body.
5) What is TITALIUM and why would I pick it over a brass padlock body?
TITALIUM is ABUS's special aluminum alloy. On the 54TI/40 it forms a solid lock body that weighs noticeably less than brass or steel of the same size while staying rigid, and the shackle is hardened steel so it still resists bolt cutters and prying. Pick it where weight matters (locks carried on a belt, on cases, on bags) or where you want a lot of locks without the mass. Pick brass instead where you want maximum body strength in a small size, like the Medeco 5260 brass body padlock or the Schlage KS23D brass padlock.
6) Does the ABUS 54 Titalium padlock stay locked if someone pries on one side of the shackle?
The 54 TITALIUM is double bolted, meaning the shackle is secured on both legs rather than just one. Cutting or forcing a single leg does not release the lock, so it resists the common one-side pry or single-cut attack. The shackle itself is hardened steel at 15/64 inch diameter.
7) Will a 15/64 inch shackle fit a standard school or gym locker latch?
Most single-point locker latches take a shackle up to about 1/4 inch, so the 54TI/40's 15/64 inch shackle goes through. The limit to check is the loop height on your latch against the 53/64 inch vertical clearance and 25/32 inch horizontal clearance inside the shackle. Deep-recessed or built-in lock pockets sometimes need a shorter body than the 1-1/2 inch width here, so measure the pocket if the locker is prepped for a built-in.
8) How does the ABUS 54TI/40 shackle compare with the brass-body padlocks like the Schlage KS23D?
The 54TI/40 uses a hardened steel shackle of 15/64 inch diameter, with 25/32 inch horizontal and 53/64 inch vertical shackle clearance on a 1-1/2 inch wide body. The Schlage KS23D/KS23F brass padlock and the Medeco 54515G both carry a 5/16 inch shackle diameter, and the Medeco 5260 carries 7/16 inch. A thicker shackle needs a hasp opening sized for it, so confirm the hasp before swapping.
9) Does the key stay in the ABUS 54TI/40 while the lock is open, and which padlocks give me the other behavior?
The 54TI/40 is a keyed different padlock for securing bags, lockers and tool boxes, and it is not sold as a key-retaining lock. If you need the key captive while the shackle is open - the usual choice where a lock must never be left off a gate - the Sargent 758 is a key retaining padlock in US4 satin brass. If you want the key free to withdraw, the Sargent 858 and the Sargent 82-856 are non-key retaining, as is the Medeco 54515G.
10) We are standardizing padlocks across a commercial property - is the ABUS 54TI/40 the right lock to spec fleet-wide?
The 54TI/40 is designated for commercial use and its aluminum alloy body keeps weight down, but it is specified for items at low risk of theft - lockers, cash boxes, tool boxes. Keyed different means every lock carries its own key, which is workable for lockers and awkward for a portfolio of gates and mechanical rooms. For a single keying program across a site, the Sargent 60-858-2 removable core padlock lets you pull the same core family you use elsewhere.
11) Is the ABUS 54TI/40 a key retaining padlock?
The 54TI/40 is a standard keyed padlock and the key comes out with the lock open, so it is not key retaining. That suits tool boxes, cases, and cabinets where the user carries the key away. If your procedure requires the key to be trapped in the cylinder until the lock is closed again, such as lockout applications, specify a key retaining lock like the Sargent 758.
12) Is the ABUS 54 Titalium rated for commercial use or is it a consumer padlock?
It's classed as commercial door hardware, and in practice it's the lock facilities buy in quantity for lower-risk points: lockers, tool boxes, cash and jewel boxes, cases. It is not a high-security or high-abuse gate lock. Use it where the value behind the lock is modest and you need a lot of units.
13) What size is the ABUS 54TI/40 body, and what does the 40 mean?
The 40 is the body width in millimetres, which works out to the 1-1/2 inch measurement carried on the spec. That's the mid-size in the 54 TITALIUM range and the one that fits most hasps and locker latches without hanging up on adjacent hardware.
