1) Can I get ABUS 72/40 padlocks keyed alike so one key opens all of them?
Yes. Every one of the nine colors is orderable two ways: KA, keyed alike, so a single key runs the whole set, or KD, keyed different, so each lock has its own key. Keyed alike is the usual call when one maintenance tech has to open lockers, cabinets and site boxes across a property on one key. ABUS 72 Series and 74 Series locks can also be combined together in one locking system, so a mixed fleet does not force a second key. Each lock ships with two keys.
2) What colors does the ABUS 72/40 come in, and how do crews use them for lockout tagout?
Nine colors: black, blue, brown, green, orange, purple, red, silver and yellow. The point of the color is assignment, one shade per trade, per area, or per worker, so a supervisor can see at a glance whose lock is on the disconnect. For lockout use, order KD (keyed different) so each person's lock only opens with the key in their own pocket. 4) My building is masterkeyed on removable cores. Will an ABUS 72/40 fit that system?
No. The 72/40 has a fixed ABUS 6 pin cylinder. It is rekeyable and can be brought onto an existing ABUS key, and 72 and 74 Series locks combine into one ABUS locking system, but it will not take an interchangeable core from your building's keyway. If the padlocks have to sit under the same masterkey as the doors, look at the Sargent 60-858-2, which is a removable core padlock, or the Sargent 82-856 in the KESO system with a brass case and stainless steel shackle.
5) What padlock should I use instead of the ABUS 72/40 if I need the key to stay captive while the shackle is open?
Look at the Sargent 758, a key retaining standard padlock in a US4 satin brass finish. Key retaining means the key cannot be withdrawn until the lock is closed again, which is what a lot of facility key control policies require so a padlock is never left open with the key in someone's pocket. The ABUS 72/40 works the other way: it is self-locking, so the shackle is pushed down to lock it and the key is not needed to secure it. That is the faster option for lockout stations and locker banks where speed matters more than key capture, but it does not hold the key.
6) Is there a padlock like the ABUS 72/40 that accepts a removable core so it can go on our existing facility key system?
The Sargent 60-858-2 is a removable core padlock with a 2 inch stainless steel shackle, from the 758/858 series. A removable core lets a facility locksmith pull the core and drop in one that matches the building's existing system, so the padlock falls under the same master key as the doors. The ABUS 72/40 takes a different approach: it uses an ABUS precision 6-pin cylinder that is rekeyable, so it can be rekeyed to match an existing ABUS key rather than having its core swapped. Pick the Sargent when the padlocks have to join an established core-based system, and the 72/40 when you are keying the padlock fleet on its own.
7) Is an aluminum padlock like the ABUS 72/40 tough enough to leave outdoors on a gate or job box?
The 72/40 is built for it. The body is TITALIUM special aluminum, which is a corrosion resistant colored aluminum, the shackle is hardened steel with NANO PROTECT plating for corrosion resistance, and the lock is flagged weather resistant and rated for commercial use. The shackle is double bolted, so it is held on both legs rather than one. Where it gets harder is constant salt spray or a washdown environment. For that duty the Medeco 521 G8R weather-tight padlock has a solid stainless steel body, which is a different level of exposure protection than plated steel over aluminum.
8) Does the ABUS 72/40 lock without the key, and can the key be pulled while it is open?
Self locking, yes. Push the shackle down and it locks, no key needed, which is what you want when a tech is closing out twenty lockers or snapping a lock back onto a disconnect. The flip side is that it will lock itself if the shackle gets bumped closed, so the key needs to be in hand before the door shuts. If your procedure calls for a key retaining padlock, one where the key cannot be withdrawn while the shackle is open so the lock can never be left hanging unlocked, the Sargent 758 is key retaining and the Sargent 858 is non key retaining.
9) The Medeco 5260 looks like the same size padlock as the ABUS 72/40. Will it fit the same hasp?
Check the hasp hole before you assume it will. The Medeco 5260 is a 52 Series brass body padlock with a 7/16 inch shackle diameter in satin chrome, while the ABUS 72/40 has a 6.5 mm shackle diameter. A 7/16 inch shackle is substantially thicker and needs a larger opening in the hasp, staple, or cabinet ear than the 72/40 does, so a hasp drilled or stamped for the ABUS shackle may not pass the Medeco at all. The other dimension worth measuring is clearance: the 72/40 gives 19.5 mm of horizontal shackle clearance for whatever the shackle has to reach around.
10) What is the brass body equivalent of the ABUS 72/40 padlock?
The Schlage KS23D/KS23F is a 20 Series brass padlock with a 5/16 inch diameter shackle, and the Sargent 858 is a non-key-retaining brass-cased padlock with a stainless steel shackle in a US4 satin brass finish.
