Padlock brass 83 Eighty Three

Our service lock 83/50 is a solid padlock with chrome plated lock body to secure objects of higher value at high risk of theft.

THE SERVICE PADLOCK

Our padlock 83/50 is a solid padlock with chrome plated lock body to secure objects of higher value at high risk of theft.

Do you want to reliably secure objects of high value at a high risk of theft? Our service lock 83/50 could be a good solution for you. It is suitable for securing grilles, doors, gates, cabinets, tool boxes, cellar windows, sheds, switchgears, or barriers and can be combined keyed alike with our profile cylinders C83, EC550, EC660, XP20S, for example. The chrome plated lock body is made of solid brass, and the hardened special steel shackle has Nano Protect™ coating for very high corrosion protection. Inside, a special cylinder is at work. You can decide for yourself whether the lock should close automatically or lock with a key. The variant with Closed Shackle (CS), i.e. a raised lock body, means additional protection for the steel shackle, which makes it much more difficult to break open the lock, such as with bolt cutters.

Technology:

  • Chrome plated solid brass lock body
  • Special alloy steel shackle with NANO PROTECT™ coating for extra corrosion resistance
  • High precision pin tumbler cylinder with patented pinning window
  • Patented ”Z-Bar“ for 2-in-1 function: converts key-retaining to non-key-retaining and vice versa within seconds
  • Cylinder can be taken out and can be re-keyed to match an existing key
  • RK: Can be keyed into many popular security keyways
  • Easy shackle change: shackle can be exchanged within seconds

Operation and use:

  • To secure valuables/goods of greater value or at a high risk of theft
  • To secure gratings, doors, gates, cupboards, tool boxes, cellar windows, sheds, switchboards, barriers, etc.

ABUS 83IC/50 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can the ABUS 83IC/50 padlock be keyed alike with the rest of my building's locks?
That's the whole point of the 83 series. The cylinder comes out and can be re-keyed to an existing key, and the lock can be keyed alike with ABUS profile cylinders including the C83, EC550, EC660 and XP20S. The RK version also keys into many popular security keyways, so a property manager standardizing a site can bring padlocks onto the same key as the door cylinders.
2) What is the difference between a key-retaining and non-key-retaining padlock, and which is the ABUS 83/50?
Key retaining means the key won't come out until the lock is shut again, so a padlock can't be left hanging open with the key in a pocket. Non-key-retaining lets you pull the key with the shackle open. The ABUS 83/50 does both: a patented Z-Bar converts it from one to the other in seconds, so you decide whether it snaps shut automatically or has to be locked with the key. If you need a fixed non-key-retaining lock instead, the Sargent 858 and the Sargent 82-856 are both non-key-retaining, and the Sargent 758 is key retaining.
3) How does the ABUS 83IC/50 compare with a Sargent or Medeco removable core padlock?
All of them are serviceable commercial padlocks, but they hang off different key systems. The ABUS 83IC/50 takes an ABUS cylinder that pulls out and re-keys to an existing key and suits ABUS profile cylinders like the EC660 or XP20S. If your site is on Sargent, the Sargent 60-858-2 is a removable core padlock with a 2 inch stainless shackle. On Medeco, the 52 Series 5260 is a brass body padlock with a 7/16 inch shackle and M3 key technology, and the Medeco 54515G XT is the electronic option with a 5/16 inch shackle. Pick the one that matches the keyway you already maintain.
4) I need a padlock that takes our facility's interchangeable core instead of an ABUS cylinder - what should I order?
Look at the Sargent 60-858-2, a removable core padlock with a 2 inch stainless steel shackle from the 758/858 series. It is built to accept a removable core so it can be pinned into an existing Sargent core system, whereas the ABUS 83IC/50 uses a removable ABUS cylinder that can be re-keyed to match an existing key. If you standardize on Sargent cores across the facility, the 60-858-2 keeps the padlocks on the same core stock as the doors.
5) The ABUS 83IC/50 is key retaining or not depending on setup - which padlocks are fixed one way?
The 83IC/50 uses a patented Z-Bar that converts key-retaining to non-key-retaining and back, so one lock covers both behaviors. If you want the function fixed at the factory, the Sargent 758 is a key retaining standard padlock in US4 satin brass, and the Sargent 858 is non-key retaining with a stainless steel shackle in the same US4 satin brass finish. The Sargent 82-856 is also non-key retaining, with a 2 inch by 2 inch brass case and stainless steel shackle on the KESO platform.
6) How wide is the ABUS 83IC/50 padlock body?
The 83IC/50 body measures 1-37/64 inches wide. That matters when you're locking into a recessed hasp or a tight cabinet latch where a wider body won't seat flat. If you need more shackle protection in the same style, ABUS offers the 83 series in a Closed Shackle (CS) version with a raised body that shields the shackle from bolt cutters.
7) Can I swap a broken shackle on the ABUS 83 padlock instead of replacing the whole lock?
Yes. The 83 series uses an easy shackle change, so the shackle can be exchanged in seconds. Combined with a cylinder that lifts out for re-keying, it means a maintenance shop can service the lock in place rather than scrapping it and re-keying a whole set.
8) For a wet or coastal outdoor gate, is the ABUS 83IC/50 the right choice or is there something more weather resistant?
The 83IC/50 pairs a chrome plated solid brass body with a hardened special steel shackle carrying NANO PROTECT coating for corrosion resistance, which suits exterior grilles, gates and sheds. Where you want an all-stainless body instead of brass, the Medeco 521 G8R is a weather-tight padlock with a solid stainless steel body, supplied less pop-out cylinder so you add the cylinder separately. That is the main structural difference: stainless body and separate cylinder versus the 83IC/50's plated brass body with its cylinder included.
9) Can I get an audit trail or electronic access on a padlock like the ABUS 83IC/50?
No - the 83IC/50 is fully mechanical, using a high precision pin tumbler cylinder with a patented pinning window. If you need electronic credentials on an outdoor shackle lock, the Medeco 54515G XT is an electronic indoor/outdoor padlock, non-key retaining, with a 5/16 inch shackle diameter and cylinder included. It runs on the XT System platform rather than a mechanical key alone, so it is a different keying program than the 83IC/50, which can be keyed alike with ABUS profile cylinders such as C83, EC550, EC660 and XP20S.
