Padlock brass 83 Eighty Three

Our service lock 83/50 is a solid padlock with chrome plated lock body to secure objects of higher value at high risk of theft.

THE SERVICE PADLOCK

Our padlock 83/50 is a solid padlock with chrome plated lock body to secure objects of higher value at high risk of theft.

Do you want to reliably secure objects of high value at a high risk of theft? Our service lock 83/50 could be a good solution for you. It is suitable for securing grilles, doors, gates, cabinets, tool boxes, cellar windows, sheds, switchgears, or barriers and can be combined keyed alike with our profile cylinders C83, EC550, EC660, XP20S, for example. The chrome plated lock body is made of solid brass, and the hardened special steel shackle has Nano Protect™ coating for very high corrosion protection. Inside, a special cylinder is at work. You can decide for yourself whether the lock should close automatically or lock with a key. The variant with Closed Shackle (CS), i.e. a raised lock body, means additional protection for the steel shackle, which makes it much more difficult to break open the lock, such as with bolt cutters.

Technology:

  • Chrome plated solid brass lock body
  • Special alloy steel shackle with NANO PROTECT™ coating for extra corrosion resistance
  • High precision pin tumbler cylinder with patented pinning window
  • Patented ”Z-Bar“ for 2-in-1 function: converts key-retaining to non-key-retaining and vice versa within seconds
  • Cylinder can be taken out and can be re-keyed to match an existing key
  • RK: Can be keyed into many popular security keyways
  • Easy shackle change: shackle can be exchanged within seconds

Operation and use:

  • To secure valuables/goods of greater value or at a high risk of theft
  • To secure gratings, doors, gates, cupboards, tool boxes, cellar windows, sheds, switchboards, barriers, etc.

ABUS 83KNK/45 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can the ABUS 83 Series padlock be keyed alike with the cylinders already on my building's doors?
Yes, and that is the main reason people buy the 83. It can be keyed alike with ABUS profile cylinders including the C83, EC550, EC660 and XP20S, so the same key that opens the door cylinders opens the padlock. The cylinder in the lock also comes out and can be re-keyed to an existing key, and the lock can be keyed into many popular security keyways. For a property manager standardizing a site, that means gates, sheds and cabinets join the same key system rather than living on a separate key ring.
2) Does the ABUS 83KnK/45 padlock snap shut on its own, or do I have to turn the key to lock it?
Either, and you choose. The 83 is self locking, so it snaps shut when you push the shackle home. The patented Z-Bar gives it a 2-in-1 function: it converts key retaining to non key retaining and back within seconds. Key retaining means the key will not come out until the lock is locked, which is what you want when a crew has to prove a gate went back on. Non key retaining lets the key come out with the shackle open, which suits a lock that stays hanging open on the hasp during the day.
3) I need a padlock a bolt cutter cannot get at. Is the standard ABUS 83 the right one?
Not the standard shackle version. The 83 as configured here has an open 5/16 inch shackle with 15/16 inch of horizontal clearance, which gives cutter jaws something to bite. ABUS builds a Closed Shackle (CS) variant with a raised lock body that shields the steel shackle and makes it much harder to break open with bolt cutters. If the lock is on an exposed yard gate or a remote site, specify the CS version instead. For an interior cabinet, tool box or switchgear, the open shackle is the easier lock to actually use.
4) Can a locksmith re-key the ABUS 83KnK/45 into a customer's existing keyway?
Yes. The cylinder comes out of the body and can be re-keyed to match an existing key, and the RK version can be keyed into many popular security keyways. It suites keyed alike with ABUS C83, EC550, EC660 and XP20S profile cylinders. The cylinder is a high precision pin tumbler with a patented pinning window, so it pins on the bench like the door cylinders in the same system rather than needing a special jig.
5) What is the closest brass-body padlock to the ABUS 83KnK/45 with the same shackle diameter?
The Schlage KS23D/KS23F is the nearest match on both counts: it is a brass padlock with a 5/16 inch diameter shackle, the same shackle diameter the ABUS 83KnK/45 carries, and the ABUS body is solid brass as well. The 83KnK/45 body measures 1-27/32 inches wide with 15/16 inch horizontal and 63/64 inch vertical shackle clearance, so confirm the hasp opening and staple size before swapping between the two.
6) I need a brass padlock with a heavier shackle than 5/16 inch - what are my options?
Step up to the Medeco 5260, a 52 Series brass body padlock with a 7/16 inch shackle diameter and M3 key technology in a satin chrome finish. The ABUS 83KnK/45 uses a 5/16 inch shackle in a solid brass body, so the Medeco 5260 is the heavier-shackle route when the hasp staple and the exposure call for more shackle section.
7) The ABUS 83KnK/45 is self-locking - what do I use if I want the key held until the lock is closed?
The ABUS 83KnK/45 is self locking and its patented Z-Bar converts between key retaining and non-key retaining operation. If you would rather buy the behavior fixed rather than convertible, the Sargent 758 is a key retaining standard padlock in a US4 satin brass finish, and the Sargent 858 is the non-key retaining padlock with a stainless steel shackle in the same US4 satin brass. Key retaining will not release the key until the shackle is closed, which is the usual requirement where an open padlock must never be walked away from.
8) We standardize on interchangeable cores across the facility - is the ABUS 83KnK/45 the right padlock for that?
The ABUS 83KnK/45 is rekeyable, its cylinder can be taken out and re-keyed to match an existing key, and it can be keyed into many popular security keyways. If your standard is a removable core rather than a re-pinned cylinder, the Sargent 60-858-2 is a removable core padlock with a 2 inch stainless steel shackle in the 758/858 Series, which lets your existing core program carry straight into the padlock.
9) Can I get an audit trail or access control in a padlock instead of a mechanical one like the ABUS 83KnK/45?
The ABUS 83KnK/45 is a mechanical padlock built on a high precision pin tumbler cylinder with a patented pinning window. For an electronic key system, the Medeco 54515G XT is an electronic indoor/outdoor padlock supplied with cylinder, non-key retaining, with a 5/16 inch shackle diameter - the same shackle diameter as the 83KnK/45, so it fits the same hasp staple while running on an electronic credential rather than a cut key.
10) Is a brass body padlock like the ABUS 83 alright for an outdoor gate that gets rain and road salt?
It holds up outdoors. The body is solid brass with chrome plating, and the shackle is a special alloy steel with a NANO PROTECT coating for extra corrosion resistance. The lock is rated weather resistant. Brass and a coated shackle are the usual pick for exterior gates, yard cages and cellar windows because they do not seize the way a plain plated steel padlock does after a winter.
11) What is the difference between the ABUS 83 padlock and a Sargent or Medeco removable core padlock?
They solve the same problem from opposite ends of the key system. The 83 has a removable cylinder you re-key to match an existing key, so it joins an ABUS profile cylinder system (C83, EC550, EC660, XP20S). If your site is already on a Sargent or Medeco system instead, the peers to look at are the Sargent 60-858-2 removable core padlock with a 2 inch stainless shackle, or the Medeco 5260 brass body padlock, which uses M3 key technology and a heavier 7/16 inch shackle. Match the padlock to whichever keyway your facility is already standardized on, not the other way round.
12) If a shackle gets cut or damaged on an ABUS 83 padlock, do I have to replace the whole lock?
No. The 83 has an easy shackle change, so the shackle swaps out in seconds and the body and cylinder stay in service. The cylinder itself also lifts out for re-keying. For an MRO stores that runs dozens of these on gates and cages, that means a cut shackle is a parts replacement rather than a new lock and a new key cut.
13) Can I use the ABUS 83 as a lockout tagout padlock on a switchgear panel?
It will physically do the job, and the 5/16 inch shackle with 15/16 inch of horizontal clearance fits typical panel hasps and switchgear lockouts, which the 83 is explicitly meant to secure. One caution: the 83 is self locking and can be set key retaining or non key retaining via the Z-Bar. For lockout work, set it non key retaining so the worker keeps the key in their pocket while the lock stays on the panel.
14) Looking for a brass padlock with a 5/16 inch shackle. What else is there besides the ABUS 83?
The closest match by shackle size is the Schlage KS23D/KS23F brass padlock, also a 5/16 inch diameter shackle. The Medeco 54515G XT is another 5/16 inch shackle lock, non key retaining, but it is an electronic indoor/outdoor padlock rather than a straight mechanical one, so it belongs on a site running access control audit trails. If you want a stainless body instead of brass for a coastal or wash-down location, the Medeco 521 G8R is a solid stainless steel weather-tight body. Pick on the key system your facility already runs, since all of these live on different keyways.
15) For an outdoor gate, what holds up besides the ABUS 83KnK/45 brass body?
The ABUS 83KnK/45 is weather resistant, with a chrome plated solid brass body and a special alloy steel shackle carrying a NANO PROTECT coating for corrosion resistance. Where you would rather have a stainless body than brass, the Medeco 521 G8R is a weather-tight padlock with a solid stainless steel body, supplied less pop-out cylinder, so plan on providing the cylinder separately with that one.
16) Is the Sargent 82-856 a drop-in replacement for the ABUS 83KnK/45?
No - they differ in both case and shackle. The Sargent 82-856 is a non-key retaining padlock with a 2 inch by 2 inch brass case and a stainless steel shackle, built in the KESO Series. The ABUS 83KnK/45 body is 1-27/32 inches wide with 15/16 inch horizontal and 63/64 inch vertical shackle clearance and a 5/16 inch shackle. The wider Sargent case and its KESO keying system mean it is a different footprint and a different key program, not a like-for-like swap.
17) Which padlock should I put on a lockout point?
The ABUS 83KnK/45 is a commercial padlock suited to lockout duty, and it is rekeyable so a facility can pin it into an existing key program. Where lockout policy requires the key to stay with the worker and the lock to be non-key retaining as bought, the Sargent 858 is non-key retaining with a stainless steel shackle in a US4 satin brass finish, and the Sargent 82-856 is non-key retaining in a 2 inch by 2 inch brass case.
18) Is the ABUS 83KnK/45 padlock built for commercial use or is it a residential lock?
Commercial. The 83 is ABUS's service padlock line, built to secure higher value goods at high theft risk: grilles, doors, gates, cabinets, tool boxes, cellar windows, sheds, switchgear and barriers. The pin tumbler cylinder is a high precision unit with a patented pinning window, and the whole lock is designed to be re-keyed and serviced in the field rather than thrown away.
