Padlock brass 83 Eighty Three

Our service lock 83/50 is a solid padlock with chrome plated lock body to secure objects of higher value at high risk of theft.

THE SERVICE PADLOCK

Our padlock 83/50 is a solid padlock with chrome plated lock body to secure objects of higher value at high risk of theft.

Do you want to reliably secure objects of high value at a high risk of theft? Our service lock 83/50 could be a good solution for you. It is suitable for securing grilles, doors, gates, cabinets, tool boxes, cellar windows, sheds, switchgears, or barriers and can be combined keyed alike with our profile cylinders C83, EC550, EC660, XP20S, for example. The chrome plated lock body is made of solid brass, and the hardened special steel shackle has Nano Protect™ coating for very high corrosion protection. Inside, a special cylinder is at work. You can decide for yourself whether the lock should close automatically or lock with a key. The variant with Closed Shackle (CS), i.e. a raised lock body, means additional protection for the steel shackle, which makes it much more difficult to break open the lock, such as with bolt cutters.

Technology:

  • Chrome plated solid brass lock body
  • Special alloy steel shackle with NANO PROTECT™ coating for extra corrosion resistance
  • High precision pin tumbler cylinder with patented pinning window
  • Patented ”Z-Bar“ for 2-in-1 function: converts key-retaining to non-key-retaining and vice versa within seconds
  • Cylinder can be taken out and can be re-keyed to match an existing key
  • RK: Can be keyed into many popular security keyways
  • Easy shackle change: shackle can be exchanged within seconds

Operation and use:

  • To secure valuables/goods of greater value or at a high risk of theft
  • To secure gratings, doors, gates, cupboards, tool boxes, cellar windows, sheds, switchboards, barriers, etc.

ABUS 83KNK/50 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can the ABUS 83/50 be keyed alike with the cylinders already in my building doors?
That's the point of the 83 series. The 83/50 takes a removable cylinder that can be keyed alike with ABUS profile cylinders including the C83, EC550, EC660 and XP20S, and the RK version accepts many popular security keyways. The cylinder pulls out and can be re-keyed to an existing key, so a facility can put the padlocks on the same key as the doors.
2) Is the ABUS 83/50 key retaining or non-key retaining?
Either, and you decide after it's installed. The patented Z-Bar gives a 2-in-1 function that converts key-retaining to non-key-retaining and back in seconds, so the same lock works whether you want it to snap shut on its own or only lock with the key in hand. Most padlocks force that choice at the order stage.
3) Can I swap an ABUS 83/50 onto a hasp that currently holds a 5/16 inch shackle padlock?
Check the staple first. The 83/50 shackle is 3/8 inch, heavier than the 5/16 inch shackle on locks like the Schlage KS23D/KS23F or the Medeco 54515G, so a hasp drilled tight to 5/16 inch will not take it. Where the hasp opening is generous, the 3/8 inch shackle is the upgrade; where it is not, stay with a 5/16 inch body.
4) For an exposed outdoor gate, is the ABUS 83KnK/50 the right choice or is there a more weather-focused padlock?
The ABUS 83KnK/50 pairs a chrome plated brass body with a special alloy steel shackle carrying a NANO PROTECT coating for extra corrosion resistance, which suits grilles, gates, sheds and cellar windows. Where the housing itself has to resist the weather, the Medeco 521 G8R is a weather-tight padlock with a solid stainless steel body, supplied less the pop-out cylinder. The difference is body material and cylinder supply: the ABUS ships as a complete lock with its cylinder, while the G8R-521 needs the pop-out cylinder specified separately.
5) What is the closest brass-body padlock to the ABUS 83KnK/50 if I need a larger shackle diameter?
The ABUS 83KnK/50 has a chrome plated brass body with a 3/8 inch shackle diameter. If the application calls for a heavier shackle, the Medeco 5260 is a 52 Series brass body padlock with a 7/16 inch shackle diameter in a satin chrome finish. Both are brass-bodied padlocks in a chrome-type finish, so the practical difference is the shackle stock and the cylinder platform - the ABUS 83 uses a removable, re-keyable pin tumbler cylinder, while the 5260 uses Medeco M3 key technology.
6) I need a padlock that keys into my Sargent small format cores instead of an ABUS keyway - what do I use?
The ABUS 83KnK/50 takes a removable ABUS cylinder that can be re-keyed to an existing key and can be ordered in many popular security keyways, but it is not an interchangeable core housing. If the facility is standardized on Sargent removable cores, the Sargent 60-858-2 is a removable core padlock with a 2 inch stainless steel shackle and accepts the core directly. Choose the ABUS when you want a brass chrome plated body and field shackle changes, and the Sargent 60-858-2 when core interchange with the rest of the building is the deciding factor.
7) Do I need the closed shackle version instead of the standard ABUS 83/50?
The standard 83/50 leaves the shackle exposed on both sides. The Closed Shackle (CS) variant raises the lock body around the shackle, which makes bolt cutter attack much harder. If the padlock sits on an exposed gate or an unattended yard, go CS; on an interior cabinet, tool box or switchgear the standard body is what the series is built around.
8) Can I replace a broken shackle on the ABUS 83/50 without buying a new padlock?
Yes. The 83 series is built for easy shackle change, and the shackle swaps out in seconds. The cylinder comes out the same way for re-keying, so a maintenance shop can service the lock in place rather than scrapping it.
9) What else could I use if I need a padlock on an interchangeable core system instead of ABUS keyways?
The 83/50 keys into ABUS profile cylinders and popular security keyways. If your facility is standardized on a removable core program, the Sargent 60-858-2 is a removable core padlock with a 2 inch stainless steel shackle, and the Sargent 758 is a key retaining padlock in US4 satin brass. For a smaller brass body, the Schlage KS23D/KS23F runs a 5/16 inch shackle and the Medeco 5260 uses a 7/16 inch shackle with M3 key technology in satin chrome.
10) Is there a simpler non-key-retaining padlock if I do not need the ABUS 2-in-1 Z-Bar feature?
The ABUS 83KnK/50 uses the patented Z-Bar to convert between key retaining and non-key retaining in seconds, so one lock covers both behaviors. If the opening only ever needs one behavior, the Sargent 858 is a fixed non-key-retaining padlock with a stainless steel shackle in US4 satin brass, and the Sargent 758 is the fixed key-retaining version in the same US4 satin brass finish. Pick the ABUS when crews need the option to change that behavior later, and the Sargent when the function is set.
11) What looks like a substitute for the ABUS 83KnK/50 but will not accept the same shackle or padlock hasp clearance?
The Schlage KS23D/KS23F is a brass padlock with a 5/16 inch diameter shackle, so it reads as a direct alternative to the ABUS 83KnK/50 but uses thinner shackle stock than the ABUS 3/8 inch shackle. The 83KnK/50 also runs 1-57/64 inch wide with 15/16 inch horizontal and 1-1/16 inch vertical shackle clearance, so if the hasp or chain was sized around those openings, verify them before swapping to the Schlage.
12) If I need audit trail or access control on a padlocked gate, what replaces a mechanical ABUS 83KnK/50?
The ABUS 83KnK/50 is a mechanical padlock with a high precision pin tumbler cylinder and no electronics. Where the gate has to be controlled electronically, the Medeco 54515G is an XT electronic indoor/outdoor padlock, non-key retaining, with a 5/16 inch shackle diameter, supplied with cylinder. Note the shackle is thinner than the ABUS 3/8 inch, so confirm the hasp and any chain still suit before switching platforms.
13) We key our padlocks into a high security system - how does the ABUS 83KnK/50 compare to the Sargent KESO padlock?
The ABUS 83KnK/50 keys alike with ABUS profile cylinders such as C83, EC550, EC660 and XP20S, and its cylinder can be pulled and re-keyed to match an existing key. The Sargent 82-856 is a non-key-retaining padlock on the KESO series with a 2 inch by 2 inch brass case and a stainless steel shackle, so it keys into a Sargent KESO system instead. The decision is which master key system the site already runs, not the hardware itself - both are brass-bodied commercial padlocks.
14) Is the ABUS 83/50 a commercial grade padlock or a homeowner lock?
It is catalogued for commercial use, with a solid brass body and a high precision pin tumbler cylinder with a patented pinning window. ABUS positions the 83/50 as the service padlock for securing goods of higher value at high risk of theft, which is why the cylinder is interchangeable and keyable into a building's existing system.
