Accentra 6220 36-7 630 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What is the difference between a concealed vertical rod exit device like the Accentra 6220 and a surface vertical rod device?
On the Accentra 6220, the vertical rods run inside the door, so nothing but the push bar and the top and bottom latch points is visible. A surface vertical rod device runs its rods on the face of the door, which is easier to install and service but leaves exposed hardware people can grab or damage. Concealed rod is the choice where appearance matters or where the door face has to stay clean. Note that concealed rod requires a door prepped for it, which is why it is usually specified with the door rather than added later.
2) Will the Accentra 6220 secure a pair of doors with no center mullion?
Yes. A vertical rod device latches at the head and at the sill rather than into a strike on a jamb, so it works on a pair of doors with no mullion in the middle. The 6220 uses a bottom deadbolt for the lower latch point and a fully adjustable roller strike up top, so the two leaves can be set independently to close and latch cleanly.
3) Is the Accentra 6220 exit device fire rated?
No. The 6220 concealed vertical rod device is not fire rated, so it cannot go on a fire door assembly. If the opening is a labeled fire door, you need a fire rated exit device, and a fire rated device also comes without dogging since a fire exit has to latch on every closing.
4) Does the Accentra 6220 come with outside trim or a lever?
No. It ships less trim as an exit only device, meaning there is no outside operation at all, just free egress from the inside. If you need people to get back in with a key or a lever, you have to order outside trim separately. Accentra offers standard and Reflections decorative levers for the 6000 series.
5) What door width and height does the Accentra 6220 36-7 cover?
The 36 inch device covers a 30 to 36 inch door opening width, and the 7 designation is for a 7 foot door height. Vertical rod devices are height specific because the rods have to reach the head and the sill, so ordering the wrong height code means the rods will not make up. For taller doors you need the corresponding taller rod configuration rather than this one.
6) Can I hold the door unlatched during business hours with this exit bar?
Yes, the 6220 has hex key dogging. Depress the push bar, turn the hex key, and the bar stays retracted so the door pushes free, which is what retail and office fronts normally want during open hours. Turn the key back to restore latching at close. The hex wrench is the tool for it, so keep one at the door.
7) Is the Accentra 6220 handed, and do I need to know the door swing before ordering?
Non-handed. One device covers left and right hand doors, so a property manager stocking spares for a building only needs one part number per size and finish rather than a handed pair.
8) Is this exit device heavy duty enough for a high traffic entrance?
It is certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.3 Grade 1, the highest duty level for exit devices and what most commercial and institutional specs call for on main egress doors. The rail is aluminum with an angled end cap that keeps the bar from catching on carts and bags, which is the usual failure point on retail and multi-family exits.
9) What size are the vertical rods on the Accentra 6220 and are they adjustable?
The rods are 1/2 inch outside diameter telescoping tubular rods, so they adjust in length at install rather than needing to be cut to an exact figure. Paired with the fully adjustable roller strike at the top, that gives you room to dial in latching on a door that has settled or on a frame that is not perfectly square.
10) Can the Accentra 6000 series be ordered with electric latch retraction or other electrified functions?
The 6000 series is offered in 13 mechanical functions and 11 electromechanical functions across rim, mortise, SquareBolt, surface vertical rod and concealed vertical rod versions. The 6220 itself is a mechanical exit only device, so if you need an electrified function tied to an access control system you would specify one of the electromechanical variants in the series instead of this one.
11) What finishes does the Accentra 6220 concealed vertical rod exit bar come in?
Five: 613E Dark Oxidized Satin Bronze, 629 Bright Stainless Steel, 630 Satin Stainless Steel, BSP Black Suede Powder, and WSP White Suede Powder. If you are standardizing a building, 630 satin stainless is the usual match for commercial openings, and the two suede powder coats are the ones to pick when you want the bar to disappear against a dark or light storefront.
12) Is an antimicrobial coating available on this exit bar for a healthcare or school building?
Yes, the 6000 series can be ordered with Microshield antimicrobial coating, which is the option facilities buyers in healthcare, education and food service usually ask for on touch surfaces. It is a specified option, not standard, so it has to be called out on the order.
