1) Will the ACSI 1550K-MDS electric latch retraction kit fit my Sargent 80 series exit device?
Yes. The 1550K-MDS is the version of ACSI's motorized latch retraction kit built for Sargent 80 series devices, and the same kit covers Arrow 1000, 3000 and 4000 series exit devices. Within those families it works across device configurations, so a rim device, a mortise exit device, a surface vertical rod or a concealed vertical rod can all be modified with it. What it will not do is cross brands. If the opening has a Von Duprin, Corbin Russwin, Yale, Precision, Falcon, Dorma, Dorex or Hager device on it, you need a different suffix in the 1550K family, not the MDS.
2) I have Von Duprin 99 exit devices. Can I use the 1550K-MDS on them?
No, and this is the most common mis-order in the 1550K line. The MDS suffix is cut for Sargent 80 and Arrow 1000, 3000 and 4000 devices only. For Von Duprin 33A/35A, 98/99 or 22 devices, the motorized kit is the 1550K-MDV, with the MDV22 covering the 22 series. ACSI also builds a solenoid latch retraction kit for Von Duprin, the 1550K-VD, if a solenoid is what the job calls for. Match the suffix to the device brand before you order.
3) Does the ACSI 1550K-MDS replace my exit device, or does it go inside the one I already have?
It modifies the device you already have. The 1550K-MDS is a motor, control board, mounting bracket and lead wires that install into an existing Sargent 80 or Arrow 1000/3000/4000 exit device to add electric latch retraction. You keep the device, the trim and the door prep. It can be done in the field on hardware that is already hung, or ordered factory-installed if you would rather the modification arrive done. Nothing about the mechanical panic function of the device changes; you are adding an electrified way to pull the latch back.
4) Can electric latch retraction be used on a fire rated exit device instead of dogging it?
That is exactly what it is for. Fire exit hardware cannot be mechanically dogged, so if you need a fire rated opening to sit in a push-pull state during business hours, electric latch retraction is the method. The ACSI 1550K-MDS is UL Listed for panic and fire exit applications and holds the latch retracted with the push bar depressed, giving you retraction and dogging at the same time under electrical control. Release the power and the device relatches and behaves as normal panic hardware.
5) What power supply do I need to run an ACSI 1550K-MDS latch retraction kit?
The 1550K-MDS runs on 24VDC and draws low current, since the motor only pulls hard during the retraction stroke and then holds. ACSI recommends pairing it with their Series 1400 power supplies. The leads are non-polarized, so you are not chasing polarity in the raceway during hookup, and the kit is rated for continuous duty, meaning it can stay retracted through a full unlock schedule rather than a short cycle. Size the supply for every device on the circuit, not just one leaf.
6) Will an electric latch retraction kit work on a pair of doors with vertical rods?
Yes. The ACSI 1550K-MDS covers surface vertical rod and concealed vertical rod configurations as well as rim and mortise exit devices, within the Sargent 80 and Arrow 1000/3000/4000 families. On a vertical rod pair, each leaf gets its own kit and its own power feed, because each device has to retract its own top and bottom latches. Plan the wiring for both leaves and size the power supply for the pair.
7) Can the 1550K-MDS be tied into a card reader and the fire alarm so the doors relock on alarm?
It is built to sit in that chain. The ACSI 1550K-MDS interfaces with life-safety and alarm systems, so a fire alarm relay or an access control output can drop power and put the device back into latched panic operation. Typical wiring runs the access control relay or the timer in the 24VDC feed to the kit, with the fire alarm interposing relay ahead of it so an alarm condition always wins.
