Adams Rite ADA-4300-30-101-628 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Adams Rite 4300 Steel Hawk deadlatch fit my aluminum storefront door?
The Steel Hawk 4300 is built for narrow stile aluminum entrance doors, and it comes in three backsets: 31/32 inch, 1-1/8 inch, and 1-1/2 inch. Measure from the face of the stile to the center of the cylinder hole on the door you are working with and order the matching backset. Door thickness has to be 1-3/4 inches. The lock case itself measures 15/16 x 5-13/16 inches by depth, so the stile has to have that pocket. Hollow metal and wood door versions are offered as well.
2) Is the Adams Rite 4300 handed, and do I need to specify left or right?
No handing to specify. The Steel Hawk 4300 electrified deadlatch is non-handed, so one part covers either swing. What you do have to specify is backset, finish, strike type and strike shape, and whether you want latch monitoring.
3) Does a cylinder come with the Adams Rite 4300 deadlatch?
No cylinder is included. The 4300 takes a standard Adams Rite MS cam mortise cylinder, which you order separately in the keyway and keying your building is already on. Mounting screws are supplied with the lock.
4) Which strike do I order with the Adams Rite 4300, and what works on a pair of doors?
Two strike styles are offered: a 4-5/8 inch mortised strike or a surface mount strike. Lip shape is a separate choice, with flat/standard jamb, flat/center hung 4 inch jamb, flat/center hung 4-1/2 inch jamb, and radius/standard stile. For a pair of doors, the 4901-02 (4-5/8 inch) strike is available with radius profiles, which is what you want where the latch throws into a second leaf rather than a flat jamb.
5) Will the Adams Rite 4300 work on a 1-3/8 inch door?
No. The Steel Hawk 4300 requires a minimum door thickness of 1-3/4 inches, which is the standard commercial thickness. On a thinner 1-3/8 inch leaf, common on older interior doors, this lock is the wrong part and you should be looking at a lock rated for that thickness instead.
6) Can a BEST 6KL latch be used in place of an Adams Rite Steel Hawk 4300 on a narrow stile aluminum entrance door?
They are built for different doors and different functions. The Steel Hawk 4300 is a non-handed narrow backset deadlatch engineered for narrow stile aluminum entrances, with 31/32 inch, 1-1/8 inch, and 1-1/2 inch backsets, a 15/16 inch by 5-13/16 inch case, and 1-3/4 inch door thickness. It accepts standard Adams Rite MS cam mortise cylinders. The BEST 6KL is a Grade 2 deadlocking latch in the 6K Series and is not an electrified unit, so it will neither drop into the narrow stile prep the 4300 occupies nor answer to an access control input. For a stile door that is already cut for a 4300, stay in the 4300 family and change the backset, strike, or monitoring option instead.
7) Will the 4300 latch keep working if someone shims the door with a card?
The 5/8 inch latchbolt carries an auxiliary deadlocking bolt that blocks the latch from being pushed back, so loiding a card or shim against it does not retract it. The latch face measures 5/8 x 1 x 5/8 inches.
8) What happens to the Adams Rite 4300 when the power drops?
The Steel Hawk 4300 is configured for fail-secure operation, so the latch stays locked on the outside when power is lost. Egress from the inside is handled by the door's exit device or lever trim, not by the deadlatch, so plan the free-egress side of the opening accordingly.
9) Should I use an electrified deadlatch like the 4300 or an electric strike on the frame?
An electrified deadlatch puts the electronics in the door leaf itself, which is the way to go on aluminum storefront where the frame is thin or where the same lock has to serve pairs and center hung openings. An electric strike keeps power in the frame and leaves the existing mechanical latch alone, which is easier to retrofit but needs frame prep and a power transfer path is not required. With the 4300 you will need a power transfer hinge or door loop to get 12, 16, or 24 VDC into the moving leaf. Adams Rite electric strikes pair with this lock if you go the frame route instead.
10) Can I get door position or latch status back to my access control panel from the 4300?
Monitoring is an option on the Steel Hawk 4300, ordered as either Monitored or None. Pick the monitored version if your panel needs latch status reporting, and run the extra conductors through the power transfer while you have the door open. The unmonitored version is power in only.
11) Is the Adams Rite 4300 rated for heavy traffic entrances?
Grade 1 heavy duty, with a steel case and corrosion-resistant plating, and rated for continuous duty electrically. That is the specification level for main entrances in schools, healthcare, and multi-tenant buildings where the door cycles all day.
12) Is there a non-electrified deadlatch alternative if I don't need access control?
If the opening does not need to be released electrically, a mechanical deadlocking latch is the simpler and less involved install, since it needs no power supply and no power transfer to the leaf. The BEST 6KL Series is a Grade 2 deadlocking latch with steel construction. Note the grade difference: the Steel Hawk 4300 is Grade 1 heavy duty, so on a high traffic main entrance the 4300 is the heavier specification even setting the electrification aside.
