The GT-1A is an audio only tenant station for the GT series Multi-Unit entry system. It is equipped with a Talk, Door Release, and optional Service Button. When a visitor calls, the tenant station rings and is answered by one touch of the Talk button. The GT-1A also has the capability of calling the Concierge/Security Guard station(s), turning on a light while speaking with a visitor at the entrance, receiving an emergency tone from a pull cord or panic call button, and releasing a door. The GT-1A is designed to be surface mounted, and has a slim streamlined design. Up to four GT-1A units can be used in the same tenant location. Communication is hands-free at the entrance station when a tenant answers the call, and is either VOX hands-free or push-to-talk at the tenant station when speaking with the visitor.

1) Will the Aiphone GT-1A work as a standalone door intercom for a single unit?
No. The GT-1A is a tenant station for the Aiphone GT Series multi-unit entry system, so it only works as part of a GT system with a GT entrance panel feeding it. For a single-door, single-unit setup you want a standalone door station and master, not a GT tenant station. Where the GT-1A fits is apartment and multi-tenant buildings: each unit gets a station on the common bus, and the entrance panel calls it.
2) Does the Aiphone GT-1A have video, or is it audio only?
Audio only. The GT-1A gives the tenant a Talk button, a Door Release button, and an optional Service button, with no screen and no camera feed. Tenants speak to the visitor and buzz them in without seeing them. If your building needs residents to see who is at the entrance before releasing the door, a GT audio station is the wrong station to spec.
3) What wiring do I need to run to each Aiphone GT-1A tenant station?
Two conductor, solid, non-shielded PE insulated wire on a common bus, and Aiphone specifies its own #872002 cable for it. The common bus part is what matters on a retrofit: stations share the run rather than each needing a home run back to the entrance panel, which is why GT is often the choice when you are pulling new wire through an occupied building.
4) If a building has two entrances, which door does the Aiphone GT-1A release?
The one the tenant is talking to. Door release follows the door where communication is established, so a resident answering the rear entrance releases the rear entrance and not the lobby. That is the behavior to expect on a property with multiple GT entrance panels, and it is why you do not need a separate release button per door at the tenant station.
5) Can I put more than one Aiphone GT-1A in the same apartment?
Yes, up to four GT-1A stations in a single tenant location. That covers a large unit or a townhouse where you want one at the entry and one upstairs, or a suite where staff need to answer from more than one room. All four ring on the same call.
6) Can a resident on an Aiphone GT-1A reach the front desk or security guard?
Yes. The GT-1A can place a call to the Concierge or Security Guard station on the GT system, which is what makes it usable in a staffed building rather than just a buzz-in walkup. It also accepts a panic call station (the GFKPS) or a pull cord, which sends an emergency tone and a call through to the Concierge. That combination is the reason this station shows up in senior housing and assisted living as often as it does in market-rate apartments.
7) Is the talk on an Aiphone GT-1A hands free, or do you hold a button?
Both, depending on which end you are standing at. At the entrance panel the visitor is always hands free once the tenant answers. At the tenant station itself it is either VOX hands free or push to talk (simplex), so a tenant who cannot hold a button down can be set to VOX. Answering an incoming call is one touch of the Talk button either way.
8) Can a tenant tell an entrance call apart from someone at their own apartment door?
Yes, if you add the individual doorbell option. A door station at the unit rings a unique tone on the GT-1A, distinct from the lobby call, so the resident knows whether the person is downstairs or standing outside their own door. Call tone and communication volume have separate controls, so the ring can be set loud without making the conversation loud.
9) Can the Aiphone GT-1A turn on an entry light when someone calls at night?
Yes, as an option. The station can switch an outside light on while the tenant is talking to the entrance station, which is worth wiring in on a poorly lit lobby or rear door where the resident wants to see the visitor before releasing. Since this is an audio station with no camera, that light is doing work for the person at the door rather than for the tenant.
10) Is the Aiphone GT-1A rated for commercial buildings or is it a residential product?
Commercial. Aiphone classes the GT-1A as a commercial device, and it is an electronic access control component rather than mechanical door hardware, so it belongs on a low voltage line item and needs power and a door release circuit coordinated with the locking hardware.
