Aiphone GT-DMB-N – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can the Aiphone GT-DMB-N entrance station be surface mounted, or does it need a back box in the wall?
Both are possible, but neither mounting kit comes with the station. Flush mounting uses the GF-3B back box, and surface mounting uses the SBX-GTDMB surface box. Order one of the two with the station or the panel has nothing to land in. For a retrofit into a masonry or existing finished wall where you don't want to cut a pocket, the SBX-GTDMB is the way to go.
2) What wire does the Aiphone GT-DMB-N video entrance station need run to it?
Two conductor, solid, non-shielded wire with PE insulation. Aiphone specifies #872002 for the audio runs and #871802 for video. It is not a shielded or cat-type cable, so if an electrician has already pulled Cat5 for this opening, plan on the correct 2 conductor run instead before the panel goes in.
3) Will the GT-DMB-N hold up mounted outdoors at an uncovered building entrance?
The stainless steel GT-DMB-N is rated IP43 and operates from -22 to 140 degrees F (-30 to 60 degrees C), so it takes cold, heat and spray-angle water but is not a submersion or driving-rain rating. Under a soffit, in a vestibule, or in a recessed entry it is fine. Fully exposed on a wall with no overhang in a wind-driven rain climate, add a hood or recess it.
4) Can the Aiphone GT-DMB-N release the door directly, or do I need a separate access control panel?
It releases the door itself. The station carries a Form C dry contact rated 24V AC/DC at 4A, which will drive an electric strike or a maglock power supply relay directly. Form C means you get both normally open and normally closed, so it works for fail-secure strikes and fail-safe mag locks alike. Check that whatever you are switching stays inside 24V and 4A; a larger mag lock supply should be switched through its own relay input rather than the load itself.
5) How do tenants get in without a key at a GT-DMB-N entrance, and how does a property manager change the directory when someone moves out?
Two ways in: the built-in NFC reader for credentialed tenants, and the 10-digit keypad for direct dialing an apartment or entering an access code. The directory itself lives on the digital display, and updates are pushed via NFC rather than by pulling the panel apart and swapping printed name strips. For a manager with turnover across a building, that is the difference between a service call and a five-minute update at the door.
6) Is the Aiphone GT-DMB-N a good fit for a multi-tenant apartment or office building entrance?
That is exactly what it is built for. The GT Series GT-DMB-N is a commercial multi-tenant entrance station: one panel at the lobby door serves the whole building through a scrolling digital directory and 10-digit keypad, so a visitor finds the unit and dials it rather than needing a dedicated button per tenant. For a single-family door or a one-tenant suite, a multi-tenant directory station is more panel than the opening needs.
7) Does the GT-DMB-N stand up to abuse in a public lobby entrance?
The face is stainless steel and Aiphone builds the station vandal resistant, which is the reason to pick it over a plastic-face intercom at a street-facing or unsupervised entrance. Same reasoning for a school, a parking structure, or any door where the panel is reachable from a public sidewalk.
