The LEM-1DLS Access Sentry system is an audio door answering and door release system for business use. The set includes a desk or wall mount master station, a surface mount door station, and an AC transformer to power the system.

A call from the door station sounds a momentary electronic tone at the master station. To answer, simply press the "talk" button to speak to the person outside the door, and release to listen. The person at the door station speaks hands free. A door release mechanism can be activated by pressing the door release button (key symbol). The voice volume and the incoming call tone volumes are adjustable at the master station. The door release button is designed to activate an electric strike or can be modified in the field to work with a magnetic lock.

1) What comes in the Aiphone LEM-1DLS Access Sentry set, and do I need to buy anything else to get it working?
The LEM-1DLS box set ships with three pieces: the LEM-1DL master station (desk or wall mount), the LE-D surface mount door station, and one PT-1210N AC transformer to power the system. What is not in the box is the wire and the lock. Door station to master station runs on 2 conductor, overall shielded cable, and Aiphone calls for #822202 (22AWG) or #821802 (18AWG). If you want the door release button to actually open the door, you supply the electric strike or mag lock and its own power source too.
2) Can the Aiphone LEM-1DLS release an electric strike, and how much current will the contact carry?
Door release on the LEM-1DL master is a normally open dry contact rated 30V AC/DC at 1 amp. That is a switch closure only, not a power supply, so the strike needs its own transformer and the master simply completes the circuit. Anything drawing more than 1A at 30V has to go through a relay rather than straight off the button.
3) Will the Aiphone Access Sentry door release work with a maglock instead of an electric strike?
Out of the box the release button is set up for an electric strike, which wants a momentary closure to unlock. A maglock needs the opposite, power interrupted to unlock, so the LEM-1DL has to be modified in the field to drive one. Aiphone states that field modification is supported. Either way the contact is a dry N/O rated 30V AC/DC 1A, so a maglock's holding current runs through its own supply and a relay, not through the intercom.
4) How many doors will an Aiphone LEM-1DLS cover?
One door, one desk. The set pairs a single LE-D door station with a single LEM-1DL master, and the call from the door sounds a momentary tone at the master. There is no door selection at the master, so a second entrance means a second system rather than adding a station to this one.
5) Is the Aiphone LEM-1DLS hands free at the master station, or do I have to hold a button to talk?
Communication is push-to-talk simplex, so the person at the master station holds the talk button to speak and releases it to listen. Only one direction is live at a time. The visitor at the LE-D door station is hands free and does not touch anything after the call button. If you need open duplex conversation at the desk, this is not the set for it.
6) Is the Aiphone Access Sentry set rated for commercial use or is it a residential intercom?
Aiphone builds the Access Sentry for business use and it is catalogued commercial. In practice it suits a front office, a shop counter, a back service door, or a small facility where someone at a desk screens and buzzes people in. It is audio only, so if the application needs the staff member to see who is at the door before releasing it, you want a video entry system instead.
7) Does the LE-D door station on the Aiphone LEM-1DLS flush mount or surface mount?
The LE-D is a surface mount station, so it fastens to the face of the wall or jamb and does not need a back box cut into the wall. That is the easier retrofit on a masonry or tile entry where cutting a flush box is a problem, but it does leave the housing proud of the surface at the door.

Both the voice volume and the incoming call tone volume adjust at the master. That matters in a reception area or a small office where an unmuted chime every time someone walks up gets old fast, and it lets you set speech level to the room instead of living with a fixed output.
