Aiphone LEM-1DL – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does the Aiphone LEM-1DL master station release the door, or do I need a separate button at the desk?
Door release is built into the LEM-1DL. It has a dedicated release button separate from the talk button, so the person at the desk can talk to the visitor and then buzz them in without touching anything else. The release is a normally open dry contact rated 30V AC/DC at 1A, which is what wires to your strike or maglock relay. Because it is a dry contact, the station does not power the strike itself, so the strike needs its own transformer.
2) What door stations work with the Aiphone LEM-1DL?
The LEM-1DL talks to Aiphone LE series door stations. It is a 1-call master, so it pairs with a single door station, not a bank of entrances.
3) How far can I run wire from the entry door to the LEM-1DL inside the office?
650 feet on 22AWG, or 1,600 feet on 18AWG, door station to master station. The cable has to be 2-conductor with an overall shield, and Aiphone specifies its own #822202 for 22AWG or #821802 for 18AWG. Unshielded or untwisted general-purpose wire is where most of these installs pick up hum.
4) What power supply does the LEM-1DL intercom need?
It runs on 16V AC or 24V DC. Draw is 4W max at 16V AC, or 200mA max at 24V DC, so size the transformer or supply to cover that plus your door strike load if you are running both off one supply. Audio output is 100mW.
5) I have two entrances I want answered from one desk. Will the LEM-1DL cover both?
No. The LEM-1DL is a 1-call master, one door station to one master. For a second entrance you need a multi-call master from the LE series rather than doubling up on this one.
6) Can I wire the LEM-1DL door release straight to a 24V electric strike?
Not directly as a power source. The release is a normally open dry contact, so it closes a circuit rather than sending voltage down the line. Run the strike from its own supply and use the LEM-1DL contact to switch it, staying inside the 30V AC/DC, 1A contact rating. Anything drawing more than that, such as a large maglock, should be switched through a relay.
7) Can two people talk at once on the LEM-1DL, or is it push-to-talk?
Push-to-talk, simplex. You hold the button to speak and release it to listen, one direction at a time. If your front desk expects a phone-like hands-free conversation, this is not that station. Voice volume at the master is adjustable.
8) Can the Aiphone LEM-1DL sit on a desk, or does it have to be mounted on the wall?
Either. The LEM-1DL is built for wall or desk mount, so it works on a receptionist counter or screwed to the wall behind a leasing office window.
9) Is the Aiphone LEM-1DL rated for commercial use, and is it a video intercom?
Commercial rated, and audio only. The LEM-1DL is an audio master station, so there is no camera or screen involved. If your tenant or facility spec calls for the person at the desk to see who is at the door before releasing it, you need a video intercom instead of the LE audio line.
