1) What does the Aiphone PD-2 adaptor actually do in a TD-H intercom system?
The PD-2 lets TD-H handsets page out over an overhead PA system and get talkback from it. It sits between the master station and the paging amplifier, taking the handset audio and feeding it to the amp input. It works with single-zone or multi-zone paging setups, so a building with several speaker zones can still use it.
2) Will the PD-2 work with a background music source, and do I have to mute the music manually when paging?
There's a dedicated music input on the PD-2 and it mutes automatically when a page comes through, so nobody has to kill the tuner by hand. The music input is rated 17K ohms, 0.3V at 1KHz for full output, and the tuner output range is 100mV to 1.2V into 10K ohms or less. Match your music source to those figures before wiring it in.
3) What amplifier input does the PD-2 connect to, and will it drive my existing PA amp?
Feed the PD-2 into an AUX or PHONO input on the amplifier. That input needs to sit in the 100K to 500K ohm range and accept 0.12V to 0.5V. The adaptor's own output is 5K ohms at 1.5V maximum. If your amp only has a low-impedance mic input, that's not the connection point for this adaptor.
4) What cable do I need to run for an Aiphone PD-2 paging adaptor?
Two different shielded runs. From the adaptor to the amplifier, use 2-conductor with overall shield, Aiphone #822202. From the adaptor to the master station, use 3-conductor with overall shield, Aiphone #822203. Both legs need the overall shield, this isn't a job for unshielded station wire.
5) How loud is talkback through the PD-2, and is it quiet enough for an office?
Talkback gain is 40dB at 1KHz with the volume at maximum, which is what lets a voice picked up at an overhead speaker come back audibly to the handset. Environmental noise on the phono path is under 80dB. Those are the two figures to check against your amp's gain structure so you don't end up with feedback in a live space.
6) Do I need one PD-2 per paging zone or one per system?
The PD-2 handles single-zone or multi-zone paging, so the zone count is managed on the amplifier and zone controller side, not by adding adaptors. The adaptor's job is to get handset audio onto the amp's AUX or PHONO input and bring talkback back, whatever zone structure sits downstream of it.
7) Does the PD-2 come with the amplifier and speakers, or do I have to supply those?
The PD-2 is only the adaptor. The overhead amplifier, speakers, any zone controller and the music source are all separate, and so is the shielded cable, Aiphone #822202 to the amp and #822203 to the master station. Budget the job on the assumption you're supplying everything but the adaptor itself.
8) Is the PD-2 adaptor a commercial-grade product or is it for home use?
