1) What conductor size does the Blackburn ACJ20 compression splice take?
The ACJ20 is sized for 2/0 aluminum conductor, splicing two conductor ends together in one barrel. It is a single-size compression sleeve, so a 4/0 or 1/0 run needs a different catalog number, not a different die setting on this one.
2) Is this a full tension splice or just an electrical connection?
Full tension. The ACJ20 is a tension compression splice, meaning it is rated to carry the mechanical pull of the conductor as well as the current, which is what you want on an overhead span rather than a slack service loop. It is built and tested to ANSI C119.4, the standard covering connectors for aluminum and copper conductors.
3) Will the ACJ20 work on copper conductor?
No. It is an aluminum splice for 2/0 aluminum. Putting copper into an aluminum-only barrel is a dissimilar metal connection, so for copper or for an aluminum-to-copper transition you need a connector rated for that combination.
4) Does the ACJ20 splice come insulated, or do I have to cover it?
Bare. There is no insulation on the ACJ20 barrel, so on any installation that needs to be covered you add tape, a cold shrink, or a heat shrink sleeve over the finished crimp. That also means the barrel length matters for your cover selection: it measures 4-3/4 inches.
5) Can I install this Blackburn splice with a bolt wrench, or does it need a crimping tool?
It's a compression connector, so it has to be crimped with a hydraulic or battery compression tool and the correct die, not tightened with a wrench. If you need a connection you can make with hand tools in the field, look for a bolted or set screw splice instead of the ACJ20.
