Blackburn PAE3931-9-2 AL PARAGRV CLAMP EXTRUDED 397-2/0

The PAE3931-9-2 is built for a 397 through 2/0 range, which is how the part is catalogued (397-2/0). It is a two-conductor clamp, so it joins one run conductor to one tap within that range. If your tap is smaller than 2/0 or your run is larger than 397, you need a different size in the PAE series.

The clamp body is extruded aluminum. Aluminum-bodied parallel groove clamps are normally used on aluminum-to-aluminum runs; any aluminum-to-copper connection has to be made with a connector rated AL9CU or equivalent for that combination. If your job is copper to copper or a mixed splice, specify a connector listed for it rather than assuming this one works.

It is a bolted connection, not a compression fitting, so no hydraulic tool or die set is needed. The clamp uses a 1/2 inch bolt, so a standard socket or wrench sized to that bolt head and a torque wrench for the manufacturer's value will complete the connection. That makes it a field-serviceable joint you can back off and re-make.

Allow for a body measuring 2-9/16 inch height by 3-3/8 inch length by 2-5/16 inch width, plus wrench swing on the 1/2 inch bolt. In a tight pull box or crowded gutter, check the length dimension against your bend radius before committing to a bolted parallel groove rather than a compression splice.

It ships bare, with no insulation on the clamp. For any splice that needs to be covered, plan on tape, a rejacketing kit, or a cover sized to the 2-9/16 by 3-3/8 by 2-5/16 inch body. On grounding and bonding work the bare connection is usually what you want anyway.

A parallel groove clamp lays two conductors side by side in grooves and clamps them with a bolt, so the joint can be made with hand tools and taken apart later for testing or re-tapping. A compression splice is permanent and needs a crimp tool and matched die. Use the bolted PAE clamp where you want a serviceable tap on a grounding or bonding run; use compression where the connection is final and space is tight.

The PAE3931-9-2 sells each, one clamp per unit. Count one per splice point and order that quantity directly; there is no carton multiple to work around when you are pulling a small count for a service upgrade or a single tap.
