Blackburn ICS76-1 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What conductor sizes does the Blackburn ICS76-1 service entrance splice accept?
The ICS76-1 is a two-conductor insulated compression splice sized for 1/0 on the A side and 2 solid on the B side, so it joins one 1/0 run to one No. 2 solid conductor. It is not a same-size-both-ends splice, so the larger conductor has to go in the A barrel and the No. 2 solid in the B barrel.
2) Can I use this Blackburn splice on aluminum to copper, or only aluminum to aluminum?
Both. The ICS76-1 complies with ANSI C119.4 when properly installed on aluminum-to-aluminum or aluminum-to-copper conductors, which is what makes it usable on a typical service entrance where an aluminum service run ties to copper. It is also RUS accepted for utility work.
3) Will the ICS76-1 work if both of my conductors are 1/0?
No. This splice is dual-rated, 1/0 on one end and No. 2 solid on the other, so a 1/0 to 1/0 joint needs a splice sized 1/0 on both sides. Putting 1/0 into the B barrel will not accept the conductor and a smaller conductor in the A barrel will not compress to a compliant connection.
4) Is the ICS76-1 splice insulated, or do I have to tape and sleeve it after crimping?
It comes insulated, so the splice body itself provides the covering over the crimp barrels. That is the point of an insulated compression splice in a service entrance location: crimp and it is done, no separate sleeve build-up. Follow the manufacturer's die and crimp sequence to keep the ANSI C119.4 compliance valid.
5) Does a compression splice like this need a crimp tool, or can it be tightened with a wrench?
Compression only. The ICS76-1 has no set screws, so it requires a hydraulic or mechanical compression tool with the correct die for the barrel. If you want a mechanical connection you can install with a hex key or wrench instead, you need a set-screw type service entrance splice, not this one.
6) Is the ICS76-1 sold individually or in a bag of multiples?
Sold each, one splice per unit, so an order quantity matches the number of splices you get. Count one per conductor pair you are joining.
7) Where is the Blackburn ICS76-1 made?
Manufactured in Mexico. That is the detail a distributor or institutional buyer needs for country-of-origin documentation on a submittal or bid package.
